A compmag isnt expensive and really is easy to use.

You might be able find cheaper options if you are looking to sell it. I've seen parts that replace the magazine release button or the bolt hold open that lock the magazine in.

Since you are storing it now with the upper separate from the lower as you must without any of these compliance options installed. You can try selling it that way. Eg sell the upper. Then sell the lower. Without the upper I don't see how anyone could say it is or isn't in compliance. It you ended up selling both halves to the same guy you might point it he should go to fixed magazine before he attached the upper to the lower.

I would ask the FFL if they will do it. Some places won't, some don't understand the rules. You can sell the upper without the FFL so no fees. But the lower must be run through the system. There was one horror story about a guy who had his gun held by the FFL cause they said it was an assault weapon by CA definitions and it wasn't. If it's in a legal condition now you can sell it.

As others have stated picking a good FFL can make the process for easier.
