Inquiry: Cleaning kit and supplies suggestions

    Everyone,

I'm sending my old kit off to my brother to use on his gear so I figured it would give me a good excuse to buy some new cleaning kit. I did quite a bit of research about this and came away with more info than I thought possible. So, I'm looking at input from all of you to see what you think before I pull the trigger.

Problem: Finding cleaning supplies for a Ishapore 2A rifle, G19, S&W SW1911, and hopefully a Spikes Tactical AR-22. Said supplies should also be flexible to clean other weapons and calibers.

Solution: Here is what I have so far (via Midway USA)

    1. M-Pro 7 Tactical Cleaning Kit
    2. Weaponshield Gun Oil (got from "best gun lube" thread)
    3. Break-Free Foaming Bore Cleaning Solvent (from "trouble getting bore clean" thread)
    4. Tipton Cleaning Jag Set 12-Piece
    5. Remington Gun Cleaning and Maintenance Mat 12" x 28"
    6. Outers Cleaning Patches 17 to 22 Caliber Square
    7. Southern Bloomer Cleaning Patches 35 to 45 Caliber Square Knit
    8. One or two toothbrushes
    9. Wheeler Engineering Gunsmithing Pick Set 4-Piece

Now I tried finding a bore light but the ones I found reviewers thought they were too flimsy or would not look to fit in a .22lr pistol action like a Buck Mark. Can any of you think of something I may be missing or better suggestions over what I have listed?

On the bore light - I use one made by Hoppes, it comes with a bent plastic light guider. It is true that the plastic is too large to fit into the chamber of a .22lr but you can still hold it there and it will suffice for inspecting the barrel of your Buck Mark. It takes two AAA batteries. I say go for it.

Also, do you really need to purchase everything on your list? Examples:

    1) Patches - I cut up old tshirts and use the cotton from those.
    2) Old toothbrushes are relegated to gun duty.
    3) Cleaning mat? I use old mousepads or clean on the foam of my gun cases.
    4) Gunsmith picks? I use long cooking wooden picks, sort of like long toothpicks, they are wood so they don't harm any finishes or scratch anything.

Just looking at it from a budget perspective, it sounds like you're going to go all out spending on cleaning supplies (which is great) but I don't think you have to spend that much to get good results.

      1. CLP
      2. Old Cotton T-Short, Torn up
      3. Q-Tips for hard to reach places
      4. Bore-Snake for each caliber
      5. That's it

IMO most people are over thinking when cleaning, I have no problems getting my guns totally clean with the items above and nothing else.

Granted I don't shoot black powder or LRN, but really I can't imagine why you would need anything else.
I do not provide legal services or practice law (yet).

        2) cleaning cable and tip - like the otis cleaning kit
        3) old rags and toothbrushes

        here is the otis kit

GAH!!! Somehow I lost track of my own thread! ^_^

          Turbinator,

I really do not need to purchase everything but since I'm pretty much giving my old cleaning kit and supplies to my brother I'm really not going to have anything available to maintain my gear. So really I'm just looking to get the best equipment while trying to not get anything I do not need.

The only really big question mark right now is the actual M-Pro 7 cleaning kit itself. It looks to have just about everything but I'm concerned it will not be able to cover both my pistols and rifles as well.

Really, I'm just looking for input since it's been quite some time since I've had to buy any of this stuff. ^_^

            Blackwater,

My concern with just leaning on a bore-snake for cleaning is I saw a friend of mine manage to get one stuck in his rifle. Took almost an hour to get the thing out but after that I pretty much went with cleaning rods.

Now, granted, this was many years ago but it left a pretty strong impression. ^_^

You know I was looking at the Otis but, as I mentioned to Blackwater, I do have reservations about going with a bore-snake mainly over it getting stuck. Now, sure a cleaning rod can suffer the same problem but my understanding was it was less likely.

i would suggest an old fishing tackle box [large] to put all your goodies in; or even the right old tool box. be creative and let's have fun! i have so much crap that it is necessary for me to at least contain the essentials for cleaning. what most women don't understand is that men need more than they need. but at least have it make sense....

Go watch the otis Video, I use only otis for all my guns from BB's to my 12 gauge, its nothing like the boresnake that gets stuck.

That's actually not a bad idea. I was thinking of using an ammo box myself carry this stuff plus the ammo I would be using. Granted, it will be a bit heavier but it should work out okay I think.

*humph* Most women huh? I represent that remark. ^_^

All kidding aside it looks like for the most part the selection I have will do the job I think. 'Tho I must admit I'm remembering now why I usually only do this every so often. o_O
