    Newbie question(s)

Late to the party and have some questions. My background.... in my 60s, owned guns all my life, but never a handgun so I am a virgin handgun owner. I have taken a training class, passed the FSC and purchased a G19 a couple of weeks ago from a LGS and waiting (for who knows how long) for it to come in and then will of course complete the final steps.

    So here are my question(s),
    1) do I have to already have the handgun registered in order to purchase ammo for it? Or can I start watching and trying to buy ammo now, knowing how scarce it is?

    2) If I have to wait, am i able to buy ammo under the same DROS as the gun?

    3) Can ammo be shipped to me from out of state by a relative and if so, what is the process?

Any other tips or recommendations you may have on this subject, I am all ears. Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Most likely you are in the CA DOJ AFS right now. You should be cleared for buying ammo.

It will be a different DROS and an extra charge of $1.

Legally, the importation is prohibited unless your receive it from your wife. If you want to be able to import ammo from any out of state vendor, you have to get FFL03/COE license. It's well described on this board.

      1. No. Get ready to pay for ammo
      2. No. Different DROS.
      3. Only if you are an FFL. So no.

Buy large quantities out of state and ship to a FFL. Use the one where you bought the gun.

Welcome to Calguns! Congrats on your first pistol. G19 is a great choice.

You can purchase ammo under the same dros as the pistol. Edit: ^ Technically its a different dros, but can be done at pick up.

You can also purchase ammo even before you've dros'd the pistol. However, if you're not in the system, you may have to pay a fee and there may be a waiting period to pick up. I haven't been through that particular process, but perhaps someone else will chime in that has.

I wouldn't wait to start picking up ammo. No one knows when things will return to normal. It could be soon, or things could get worse before they get better. So I wouldn't wait.

Unfortunately you can't have ammo shipped to you directly. It needs to go through an FFL.

No...you can buy ammo now. The ammunition purchase authorization isn't based on the firearm or caliber. The state uses the entry in the AFS (Registry) as a benchmark for individuals having had a background check. Simply having any firearm on the AFS will clear you for the $1 ammo check. If you purchased a long gun since 1/1/2014, that purchase is in the AFS and will support your ammunition purchasing. If you self-registered any gun, it will be in AFS.

If you aren't in AFS, then you'll have to pay $19 for a single time review and approval, and it will take time to clear (it's a separate DROS).

          Yes. From the DOJ website:
The person was approved by the Department to receive a firearm from the ammunition vendor, pursuant to Penal Code section 28220, if that vendor is a licensed firearm dealer, and the ammunition is delivered to the person in the same transaction as the firearm. In this scenario, the dealer will use the approved firearm eligibility check as the approval to purchase ammunition, and will submit the ammunition purchase to the Department during the delivery of the firearm.
The specifics are laid out in

There is no "process"; only rules.

          CA PEN 30314
          30314.
          (a) Commencing January 1, 2018, a resident of this state shall not bring or transport into this state any ammunition that he or she purchased or otherwise obtained from outside of this state unless he or she first has that ammunition delivered to a licensed ammunition vendor for delivery to that resident pursuant to the procedures set forth in Section 30312.
          (b) Subdivision (a) does not apply to any of the following:
          (6) A person who acquired the ammunition from a spouse, registered domestic partner, or immediate family member as defined in Section 16720.

          16720.
As used in this part, “immediate family member” means either of the following relationships:

          (a) Parent and child.

          (b) Grandparent and grandchild.

-You could ask the vendor to run an ammo authorization for $1. If you are in AFS for anything, you'll get cleared and be able to buy ammo; if not, it cost you a buck.

-FFL03 + COE for about $100 you don't worry about the out of state stuff.

-Clean out the safe, because handguns are like Lay's Potato Chips....

            Some clarification, if I may:

If the vendor delivers the ammunition at the same time as the gun, the gun's DROS (background check) is used to clear the purchase...not a new DROS; no new fee. (Regulations cited, above).

The legal importation of ammo isn't limited to what's received from one's wife. See the statute posted above.

"Any" is too broad...Not all out of state vendors accept FFL03+COE credentials for ammo purchase and importation.

            Best.

Not a different DROS if the ammo is delivered with the gun.

Supporting the LGS is important, but be aware of any storage/handling fees they may tag on. A pre-paid pass-through on their part should be something they'd be interested in, but storage of the ammo until you pick it up is going to cost something.

              Best.

They always try to sell me ammo on pickup day. Save that extra dollar... I never do cause I reload.

Thanks for all of the information and advice. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but if I am reading things correctly, my dad, who lives in TX could send ammo to a FFL, but I would need to confirm they will accept the transfer and find out their fee. Correct?

Thanks again for everyone's recommendations and insight. I doubt I am in AFS as I moved to CA years ago and have not registered anything. Finding ammo is going to be a fun ride. Thanks
