Couple of months ago, I had an opportunity to speak to Mr. John Pride, a retired LAPD officer and PPC champion. He said he has been building a scope and marketing them. I asked him if I can test one of his scopes.
He has sent me a 10X42mm scope with Rapid Reticle. The reticle looked little busy or cluttered, but I think the shooter can get used to it. The exterior of the scope resembled a Leupold Mark 3 scope. It had usual elevation and windage adjustment in 1/4 minute and side mounted focus knob. The scope came with a sun shade. The test scope was made in Japan. I mounted the scope on my Remington 700 5R rifle in 308 Win caliber.
I took it out to the Angeles Range today and shot at 100 yards first. I sighted it in at 100 yards and then moved the reticle 5 minutes in each direction per 3 shot group, up, right, down and left. The point of impact moved in fact 5 inches and when I adjusted the reticle and it returned to original point of impact when the reticle was adjusted to the original position.
I then shot the rifle at metal targets at various distances to 600 yards. Using Federal Gold Medal 168 grain Match ammunition, I was able to hit each target in 100 yards increments to 600 yards with a single shot using the reticle. Mr. Pride told me that the reticle was calibrated for 168 and 175 grain bullets. It prove to me that the reticle was in fact accurate for 168 grain bullets.
I did not shoot for accuracy at ranges beyond 100 yards, because I could not post targets, but by judgng the impacts on targets at longer distances, I am certain that the scope will certainly do the job on man size target to 800 yards as the scope reticle indicates. I certainly believe this scope will fill the gap between some cheaper scope and more expensive, Leupold Mark 4 or more expensive ones. Good thing about this reticle is that once you zero the rifle at 100 yards, you don't have to have a 10 - 20 minute base to compensate for the elevation since the scope has the built in reticle, which means you can have your scope close to the barrel.
I will definitely try to buy on from Mr. Pride. I will see if he will give me some price break.
