    Recommendation for first Remington 700

Been looking at these bad boys and not sure where to start. Want to get a good long range gun but not sure if I need to go all out for my first one since I'll be learning.

      Budget?
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Don't skimp on the glass. You should factor that in your desired total expense.

According to Randall, the 5r barrels are the best 700 factory barrels coming off the line. He recommends .308 to learn on, it teaches recoil management, proper position, and how to read the wind.

I followed his advice. I am very happy with my rig.

Don't really have a set one, would rather not be cheap about one though. I know getting a good set up requires investment. I'll just cry once and be good 😅

Yup! My rig is an SS 5R, which he helped me set the glass when I was a newbie...

The cheapest way is to just get a rifle already built, like a Tikka T3X TAC-A1, or a Bergara chassis rifle. If you want to start with a low budget rig there are lots of threads in manual rifles about low-cost beginner setups. You'll find they often start with Savage.

Got a police model with 18 inch threaded barrel in jail right now. My first one too. I plan to put on Riton Mod 5 and muzzle break.

5r with excellent scope and aluminum bedded stock has been all I could ask for fun and learning at the range.

Do you want a traditional rifle stock or a chassis? 308 or 6.5CM? I wish I would've known about these when I first started and I probably wouldn't have bought some of the rifles I did.

If you want a chassis rifle you can shoot off the shelf, get something like a Ruger Precision Rifle or Tikka T3x Tac1. I'd suggest 6.5CM because it outperforms the 308, but others will talk about barrel life, ammo cost, etc.

Or you can get a barreled action and then choose your own stock. I already owned an HS Precision HTR in 308, which shoots FGMM 175gr SMK 1/2 MOA all day, but it's 1:12 twist and couldn't stabilize the Hornady 178gr 308 so I purchased a 700P 20" 5R barreled action in 308 1:10 twist and put it on an MDT chassis. It can't shoot as well as the HS Precision, but that's a $4000 rifle so I didn't expect it to. It's close though.

I also owned an RPR in 6.5CM and sold it to upgrade to a Masterpiece Arms. MPA is a great rifle and comes with 1/3 MOA guarantee, but probably overkill for my needs.

And as others have noted, get a decent scope. I tend to top out at $2300 Nightforce NXS on my rifles, but I also have $1,000 Vortex Viper PST II's on several and a Nightforce SHV on the 20" 308 described above.

I'm no expert and I'm sure there are others who know a lot more than I do, but as I said, I've learned a lot over the past several years so PM me if you have any additional questions.
Too many rifles, not enough time...

I’d go 6.5 Creedmoor all day. Sure there are better rounds but for availability of factory ammo and performance it shines.

1st question is purpose? Long range hunting? Or just pinging steel/paper? How long is long range?

Two options come to mind, 700 Police in 308Win, or Long Range model in 3006.
