Is there a new type of gun owner?

Is there a new type of gun owner?

People that favor "matching colors" and "unscratched guns" over range time, and proficiency? Others that prefer "tacticool" rifles and "shotty(s)" over a useful or even useable firearm?

Did the internet create this phenomenon by providing a public platform for individuals to display (show-off) their firearms, without ever having to go to the range?

It's just that you're noticing it now.

It goes back to at least the sixtes, and there will always be a segment of the gun owner demo that buys 'em and admires 'em but never learns how to use 'em.

When my dad had the shop and range back in the 50's-60's, he'd sell rifles and handguns all the time to folks that never fired them. The satisfaction of owning them were enough for the buyer.

If it wasn't for those types, the unfired/NIB 20 year old firearm wouldn't exist, so don't be too hard on them.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

Isn't that partly the point of a "collection?" I have some that get shot once, cleaned then put away. I don't shoot them because there are other platforms I prefer, but I won't sell it either because I own it just to have.

I certainly fall partly into that category. I baby some of my guns, dreading that first scratch.

Good question I sell alot of "tacticool" rifle parts. They sell better, faster than most other parts. Its all about what fits the shooters needs mostly wants.

I'm not refering to collectors, many of these folks are buying $199 Big 5 special shotguns or 'tacticool airsoft' AR15 parts from ebay, rattle canning their gun to get it to 'match'. That kind of junk is not collectible.

ok i'll admit it, i like my tacticool AR and i was super bummed out about the first scratch on my rifle, not done by me of course. however i would love to get more range time and even take some classes but given how ammo is right now and my lack of money, its not priority. so i sit here in my room enjoying my AR like a painting.

Part of what I'm wondering is; Are they really "shooters"?

i'm guilty of a little babying. there are some guns that i don't want damaged (i.e. HK P7M8.) then there are the guns that i shoot and train with and i don't care if they get scratch or dinged (i.e. AR's, Glocks, etc.) i don't abuse them though.

I handle $2000-$3000 handguns a bit gentler than say my, Colt Trooper or XD.

NO its not new... People have guns they never shoot, trucks they never offroad and vette's they never race.... always have been.

I picked up a HK mk23 that had zero rounds fired through it. The previous owner was a collector. So yes, there are people who buy for the aesthetics and not shoot it. I'm partially like that. I have guns that I use extensively, and would grab it if I have to protect myself. Other guns are just for collecting.

Did you build your 68 Barracuda with junk parts from Pep Boys? Did you paint rattle cans from Home Depot? Did you replace the chrome with chrome colored plastic?

You do know what I'm getting at.
