Insurance for firearms? Cost for policy?

    Hi Folks,

Does anyone know of a good insurance company to quote firearm insurance?
I and renter and already purchase Renter's Insurance.
The problem with the standard renter's insurance is that they either do not cover firearms or they only cover up to $2500.
Heck, two or three firearms may exceed that anyway.
Renters insurance for me is around $290 per year covering ~$70,000 of property. It does not cover floods. How much can I expect to pay to cover firearms as an additional policy?

Talk with your insurance broker and see if they can attach a rider to your primary policy that covers only firearms. You may have to provide an inventory, and valuation.

I have a custom built guitar that my broker added a rider to my regular renter's policy. I had to provide a letter from the maker stating the replacement value. The annual premium is quite reasonable.

If i have a $150,000 to cover personal items that are lost or destroyed then it should cover anything if i am willing to pay the price. we are insurance poor in this state because the state cannot get control of wildfires and so forth. The state fails and we get to pick up the price tag.

My insurer required me to get a certified "professional" appraisal on each gun. Cost would have been around $300 for me.

I have a policy through Lockton Affinity Outdoor. I found them trough the NRA it cost $320 for $21000 Unscheduled Property and $2500 Scheduled Property.

Any gun over I believe $1000 has to be scheduled. They want make model and serial number but no appraisal. If I remember correctly they do want an appraisal at a certain value. I scheduled my AR-308 as I spent about $2500 building it.

They cover accessories and I believe ammo, also.

Look for valuable property insurance. That's what USAA calls it.

I covered 26k worth of stuff, and the premium is 136 annually.

              Not too bad.

I called Eastern Insurance to verify that they would cover the market value of guns in California vs Blue Book value or values in other parts of the country. They double checked and said it would be local replacement cost. Their price is $150 for up to 40K of guns. I believe the link can be found in a previous post.

For me the big deal is with the increased value of off roster firearms, if replacement cost here in California is not covered, the insurance is not worht buying.

This question gets asked every other week. Collect Insure and Eastern are usually the two most recommended. Most standard home owner companies will sell you a rider. But they're usually a lot more expensive and often require serial numbers.

I've been with Collect Insure for many years and they've been great to work with...but I haven't had to file a claim yet (knock on wood).

                  Some general tips...

Make sure you have photos, serial numbers, copies of receipts, etc. You may not need them for the policy but you will need them for a claim. Pulling that info together after the guns are gone is usually a lot more difficult

Don't forget to account for all the "accessories"...holsters, bags, cases, optics, ammo, mag pouches, magazines, tools, timers, belts, etc. That stuff adds up quick and it's easy to overlook

If you're like most people you will probably buy and sell a few things each year. Like all insurance policies, you probably want to sit down at least once a year and adjust your coverage as necessary.

Yep, USAA is gtg. Every claim we have ever had has been a breeze and they have been more than accommodating. We have home, auto and property (guns/jewelry).
