    1. Treat all guns as if loaded (even when you know they aren't).
    2. Never point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
    4. Know your target and what is beyond it (avoid all collateral damage).

      Thank you, logic.

Red dots & astigmatism could be a problem for you. Try holographic or prismatic options if it is. I'd let you try my Primary Arms red dot but I'm never in your area. If you end up liking a red dot set-up, I would recommend lower 1/3 over absolute. Your sight picture will be less cluttered & you wouldn't have to dip your head down as much. Lower 1/3 will allow you to co-witness, if need be.

While watching Youtube vids, I came across a review on the Vortex Razor AMG UH-1. the reviewer has been the only one I have ever heard talk about Optics and astigmatism.
My wife has astigmatism and can’t really see red dots. Try before you buy (if you can). She ended up with a 1-6 scope.

If you have mild astigmatism forget the Aimpoint and Eotech, been there done that. These best that I have found so far with these type of sights is the Holosun. The LED reticle is much better for astigmatism, clear and sharper to the eye.

            Eotech with mild astigmatism

              I’d recommend Trijicon MRO.

Made in US, good battery life.

I have the green one but the battery only lasts one year or so, so if I had to do it again I’d go with the red dot instead.

When you fire your AR put the tip of your nose right on the charging handle that helps you to be consistent in getting your site picture. I was a drill sergeant and taught that as well as was taught that by my drill instructors. Don't worry it doesn't hurt you don't even feel any kickback from the charging handle as it doesn't move just the bolt inside the weapon.

The iron sights ensure you have a consistent point of aim and zero your weapon from that. You're supposed to put the tip of the front site in the middle of the rear sight circle. And zero from there. (But if you find it easier to have the front site a little lower than center just zero it from there - if you do so remember when firing the weapon you have to aim that way and not by putting the tip of the front site dead center.) It's just consistent point of aim.

As far as using something besides the iron sights - I'd go with a scope. I detest red dots.

I was in the same shoes you were. You just have to do a lot of reading and watching videos. Also go to the gun store to check them out in person. Some good names are Vortex (Strikefire), Aimpoint (Pro), Eotech, Trijicon (MRO). Hopefully you will find what you're looking for.

My eyes hate the EOTech. I see a flicker from the dot

I don’t have this issue with Trijicon nor aimpoint.

Gun shows are good to see a bunch
                    Shooting classes are good too

Finding people to go shoot with is also great

The best compromise optic is to get a low power variable with a true 1x and a daylight visible illuminated reticle either a circle or horseshoe shape. So basically on 1x it works like a red dot, but you can crank up the power and see the target when you need it.

                            I have
My first one drained batteries overnight but Vortex replaced it asap
and the new one works fine
It is fast to use which IMO is important for HD It is less expensive than Eotech but works on the same proncipal.i.e. Holographic sight, ring with center dot Time will tell if its as durable as Eotech. My favorite is the Trijicon ACOG Pricey, but I think its the best optic out there. Tritium/fiber optic is bright, the glass itself is excellent and there are no batteries to let you down when you need it most.
Buy once, cry once really applies with optics Bite the bullet and get the ACOG You will enjoy the clarity of the optics and the reliability of the tritium/fiber optic illumination will last you 10 years or better.
Good luck with whatever you choose.
