    Range finder

Hello again, I'm thinking about buying a "Range finder" I'm sure some of you guys play golf and use these. Should I stick with one that says "Pro Golf, you'll get a hole in one overtime" or should I get the one that says "Tactical " on it.?

    What are you guys using?
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

What are you going to be shooting at? Flagsticks? Get the golf model.

Some of the golf ones have a limited range.

Sig, that's kind of what I'm asking. I have never used one of these. I played golf on Wed, one of the guys in our group tee-d up a ball and knocked it over the green. He said that he made a mistake and pointed it to a tree on the back side of the the green. It's a laser, right?
So I don't see how there is a difference from pointing it at the flag, front of a sand trap or a spot in the middle of the fairway, compared to a rock, target stand or steel plate.

It does seem like the the two work the same way..

Golf laser range finders are usually 1st target. Meaning the range to the 1st target.

Hunting or shooting range finders usually 2nd target. Meaning they do not range to the closet but behind that. The good ones will let you pick 1st or 2nd target.

Why do you need 2nd? If whatever you are shooting at is 10 yd behind a bush, 1st target will give you the bush, 2nd target will give you the target.

If all you will ever do is shoot at unobstructed targets, then 1st target ones will work just fine. But how fare will you range? Most golf ones don't go very far past 300yds.

Right, they're lasers so you have to hit something that reflects back. Middle of the fairway won't work. Pick something the same distance, like a tree, and range that.

That's why I asked what you're going to shoot.

Awwww, I see. I appreciate the info...
That explains why he missed the flag stick and it hit on the tree behind the green.

If he can get real steady and lase the flag it might work. Not as reflective as the stick but a lot bigger. It's not like sonar where you can get "close enough", a laser has to reflect directly off an object. The beam scatters a little but you basically have to hit the target.
