  • Do I need a bench rest to zero.

I have an Eotech 551 and I want to zero (50 yrd.) it next week. Do I need a bench rest and spotting scope or can I get by with being a cheap bastard? Thanks.

A few sandbags should be all you really need. Most ranges have them for free to use. A couple in the front and one in the back under the butt should do the trick.

What gun are you sighting in anyway?

It's nice to see the holes in the target.
You might see one or two but when they start clustering a bit you can lose track.

And 223 holes are harder to see than 308 holes.

"Shoot-N-See" (Shoot-N-C??) targets by Birchwood Casey and available many places, including Big 5, etc. are helpful. These black vinyl targets leave larger flourescent green rings around the bullet hole(s).

Many rifle ranges have scopes for rental - maybe a buck or two, and they hold your drivers license as security until you return the scope as you leave range.

For true accuracy, it's always nice to filter out some body movement which spreads groups.
You don't need a fancy benchrest but again, many rifle ranges have a stack of nice sandbags you can stack - which will do the job nicely.

i have the same comb... simply awsome.

with the .223, a spotting scope really helps, you can get inexpensive ones by bsa from swfa.com or whatever.

You dont need a rest really as you have the bipod.
first tip, start close, say 15yards, or 25, and zero in bit by bit, then back the target up and rezero. Also, if your not on paper, you can either
          A. boresight (or in your case, line sight). sit her on the bipod, prop up the rear (shoe, or whatever to make the line of sight of the barrel, at your target) then adjust the sight to match the spot.. then shoot and adj as necessary.
          B. Shoot into dirt and look for the trail, and adj just enough to at least get on paper to do it the traditional way.

With that setup, dont expect head shots at 300yds, but they can be done... i often hit the 10" plate at 300...

be sure to adj. brightness to the lowest you are comfortable with, not the brightest, as it will sharpen up that 1moa dot.

Cheap = Use a backpack stuffed with T-Shirts for a rest, shoot prone. That should be plenty good to sight in at 50 yards. Make sure your muzzle is beyond your backpack

As bwiese said, just get the shoot-n-see. You probably don't need a spotting scope at 50 yards.
Even cheap binocular (8x or less) will do the job at 50 yards.

I did not do the compact fore-end...yet. The bipod feature I have not tried, but I read in numerous threads that it sucks.

people think the bipod sucks because it swivels and flexes, but those features you must pay extra for from Harris...

other negatives are that it doesnt adjust length... but there are times to use it, and times not to. i am glad i have it... Use it and decide before another convinces you how to think/feel about it... Heck, if you believed the hype youd have a mini14

I've never used mine as a bi-pod, I am too afraid that I could grab the barrel after shooting a couple hundred rounds; don't think it would be very accurate shooting of the bi-pod. It does a very good job as far as handrails go.
