    Firearms from family members

So my grandpa has an old Colt King Cobra blue'd 4 inch that he wants to give me. He got it a long time ago and of course does not have any of the paperworks. Original cardboard box shows 08 97 stamped, Im assuming that's the date?? Anyways, since he doesn't have the paperwork anymore, would I have to do anything to transfer the firearm? What if I would like to sell it in the future, would I need proof of ownership? Or does the DROS just go by serial numbers? Anything would help! Thanks

If he is in Ca no ffl just fill out paperwork. If he is out of state must go thru ffl here. Look up interstate intrafamilial and intrastate intrafamilial transfer.

Your grandpa can transfer the weapon to you. It's called an intrafamilial transfer.

California allows Non-FFL transfers among certain family members, all of whom live within California. Federal law has nothing similar - an intrafamily transfer between residents of different states must use a FFL in the state of residence of the person receiving the gun.
In all cases the law specifies the receiver must not be prohibited from owning guns.
The applicable Penal Code is 27545

Were both from California. For the interfamilial transfer document, it only has one section for the owner information though. Would I just put my information? Thanks for the information guys

Yes, just your info. Someplace there is a box for 'from', which can be just 'grandfather'.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
