TSA on flying with guns - https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transport...and-ammunition
You'll have to check with your specific airline.
Occasionally, TSA seems not to know its own rules. And some airports handle things a bit differently than others.
Generally, you have to have your gun unloaded in a locked case, and you have to present the gun and case to an agent, so s/he can verify it is unloaded.
I'm told that saying 'I am flying with an unloaded firearm' is less exciting than 'I have a gun!'
That done, you'll get a card/paper to fill out and put in the case. The airline agent should tell you how to get the gun to TSA if you have to do it, otherwise will tell you to hang out where you can be found in case TSA wants to talk to you.
So far as I have heard, no place in CA cares about arriving passengers flying with guns. Pick up your bags, walk out. (I kinda miss the days when there were folks checking passenger-held bag tags against the bags themselves)ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page

Read the TSA rules, follow them and you'll have no trouble. Nobody cares.
Been doing it for 25 years with rifles and pistols, flown north, south and east, never had a hiccup.
I do use heavy metal cases with oversized padlocks, which would be harder for airport employees to break open or slip into a personal bag to steal, but that's just my personal travel habit.Vae VictisComment

For the return trip you will need a lockable, hard-sided case for the pistol. You will also need a factory box for any ammo that is coming back with you.
Before going to the airport, unload your pistol and place it inside the lockable container. Lock it with a non-TSA lock. Ammo must be in a factory box (it doesn't need to be locked).
At the check-in counter, say in a clear voice, "I am declaring a firearm." They may (but may not) ask any of the following.
1) to see the pistol box
2) to see the actual pistol
3) proof that it is unloaded
They will give you an orange card to sign, and place it inside the luggage. At that point, they may send the luggage through the normal baggage handling conveyor, or they may return it to you and ask you to carry it to a special TSA screener.
After you land, your luggage may (but may not) be routed to a special baggage handling area for you to pick up.
Good luck! Don't be nervous!Comment
