They are great little guns. I have one from the first year of production sometime in the early 80s - the version without the trigger guard. I've owned it since new and it has a bunch of .410 and .22 rounds thought it and still nice and tight.

I've carried mine in the woods, the mountains, and the desert. It is a rugged little thing.

Such cool little guns, and being all metal they were very utilitarian. I had one in .22 Hornet and stupidly I let it go. In retrospect if I had the .22 version I may have kept it around. I’ve thought about getting a Savage in .22 WMR/.410 but they are awful proud of that little plastic thing...

But this survival gun was meant to help forage for food.

For that, the .22 calibers would be more useful than .357

Honestly, I believe the .410 is better than the .22 - for simple reasons that I found out by accident (ever been dehydrated and exhausted enough to compromise manual dexterity and reasoning?). My eyes aren’t great, and if I’m in a survival situation, I’m likely hungry, tired and thirsty, maybe even hurt. On a good day my accuracy is - acceptable. Throw in some hardships, and a shotgun pattern is going to help increase my chance of getting a fat bird in my stew pot.

And .357 is just fun out of a carbine.

Yep. I've been told, and you know it's true when I've been told, that the survival rifle design
was created for USAF Pilots. It couldn't be for Navy & Marine Corps because they are Aviators.

The things you learn from the OGs hanging around the former CA gunshows for too long.

That's neat. I remember when Springfield sold these. In fact somewhere I think I have a sales brochure...

                            I'll try and find it.
                            Poke'm with a stick!
