It is all personal preference. I personally do not own a 9mm and probably never will. Some like the lesser recoil, but most of my friends that have them like the cheaper price of ammo.

I just like to brag that I has a "Glock Fotay" and then NOT shoot myself...

I own both 9mm and 40s&w. I would go with whatever you shoot better with. Some people have tighter groups with a 40 than 9, however 9mm rounds are cheaper if you plan on doing alot of shooting.

That is one I would want, It also has a cool history...

40S&W here. If I had to do it over again I'd have gone for 9mm. Nothing against 40S&W, 9mm is just better on the wallet.

There was a Ruger employee posting over at rugerforums a year or two back, and he said 85% of their semi-auto centerfire handgun sales were 9mm.

I don't know how that applies to the other makers, but I'd bet that most people who aren't gun nuts (that doesn't include most of calguns) buy a 9mm for their first semi-auto centerfire.

I prefer 9mm for the cost of shooting and the smoother recoil. I really don't care for the sharp recoil of .40 at all, but that's me.

I like 9mm and wouldn't feel underarmed with good SD/HD 9mm ammo, but I prefer to practice with .40. The problem that most people use regular pressure 9mm ammo for practice and hot one for SD/HD and there is big difference. In .40's case, recoil is pretty much the same with both practice and HD/SD ammo.
