Online purchase sales tax

The retailer online should not charge sales tax. You should only be charged by the receiving FFL. Just make sure your FFL is on board to receive. Some charge a lot more than others to receive... $60 is about average.iTrader: 52 transactions, 100% positive.Comment

Yep.
Some online retailers charge sales tax. I've been charged many times. If the online retailer did not charge, then the FFL will use the rate in their location.Comment

^What were the circumstances? Just curious.
I’ve never been charged tax by the seller, but all of my online purchases have come from out of state. If it’s a CA seller, I can understand charging tax.iTrader: 52 transactions, 100% positive.Comment

Many out of state gun sellers are collecting Ca tax, they are now required to by law if they ship more than $500k/yr of goods into CA. This applies to sellers of any type of goods, not just guns.
This is a result of the 2018 Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair.
In Ca the collection requirement took effect April 1, 2019.
So the only sellers who might not be collecting tax, do not meet the annual dollar threshold for goods shipped to CA. All of my gun purchases from out of state the past year have been taxed at the point of sale, and same goes for most all other products I have bought.Last edited by SkyHawk; 05-15-2020, 8:46 PM.Comment

Go try and checkout something from Grab A Gun. They charge sales tax and they're in Texas. That's why I asked which was odd to me in the beginning and didn't want to get double taxed being this is Ca and allHistory doesn't repeat itself but it rhymesComment

I've ordered about a dozen online and the receiving FFL never recalculated the sales tax.Comment

It is the same with cars. When we sold a car to CA customer in Nevada (new or used), we were required to collect the NV sales tax by NV . When registering the car in CA, if the tax rate was higher than the NV tax rate, the customer would pay the difference.RP1911
