    BIG 5 does transfers

so i went into Big5 today to buy a BB gun to shoot the field mice that chew on the cables under my car's hood and bought a shotgun instead, 199.00 for one of the chinese 870 knock offs (might as well). anyways long story short the guy tells me that all BIG 5's that sell guns do private party FTF trades as long as they are rifles or shotguns for $10.00

$10? Which Big5 is this? I should make a note of it.

FFLs in CA are required to PPT, and the maximum they can charge is $10 above the DROS fee.

That's incorrect. It's $10 for Big5, but another $15 for the government. Yeah, no handgun PPT's. The guys who charge up to $100 is for dealer to dealer transfer for you, and not a PPT.

If you are saying that they charge $10 for dros and service, then it's a awesome deal.

Hopi is correct. A PPT transfer done at the dealer is $35 max, $10 for the dealer + $25DROS for the state.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

It is $10 + $25 for DROS = your typical $35 rate. Also no OLLs.

Because that is hte law, on PPT transfers, hte dealer is allowed a $10 dealer fee maximum.

Firearms shipped in to the dealer are not PPT transfers, and the dealer is not limited to the $35 PPT.

I still don't understand how they can refuse to PPT any CA-legal firearm, handgun or longgun. That is a violation of law, is it not?

                    Wasn't talking to Hopi.

Last time I did a PPT at Big5, it was $25 total. Turners is $30, and most other places it's $35 total. Of course, most of the firearms I need to PPT they won't touch.

They don't sell handguns so they aren't required to PPT them is what I've always heard.

I'm not sure I'd want to transfer a high value long gun at Big 5.

It's not worth it, trust me. I transferred an Ithaca pump shotgun and it took hours. The guy insisted on calling the DOJ to make sure it wasn't an AW.

Disaster during the transfer and disaster during pickup.

                            OK

sounds like Big5 didn't collect a dealer fee, since $25 is mandated to CADOJ, and Turners was only collected $5 on it. Funny that they would discount a PPT, but wanted $125 to do a transfer.

What fees can I charge for handling a Private Party Transfer (PPT)?
If the transaction is a PPT, you are restricted to charging no more than $25.00 in State fees described and $10.00 per firearm for conducting the PPT. For example:

For a PPT involving one or more handguns, the total allowable fees are $35.00 for the first handgun, and $31.00 for each subsequent handgun.
For PPTs involving one or more long guns, the State fees are limited to $25.00 for the whole transaction plus $10.00 dealer fee per firearm transferred.
                            (PC section 12082)

                              Yup,

12082(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a dealer who does not sell, transfer, or keep an inventory of handguns is not required to process private party transfers of handguns.
