How to mail rifle to myself??

Like the title says, Ive never mailed a firearm so Im not sure which service to use, but Im pretty sure its legal as long as its not a pistol, someone correct me if im wrong. Its a Russian SKS, I scored it at an antique show here in Minnesota and now I need to get it home, I know I can bring it on the plane but I dont really want to buy a hard case if I can just mail it. Let me know, Thank you

UPS ground, you can mail it in a cardboard box. Obviously no ammo and if it were my I'd put a cable lock through it as well.

They will ship firearms but many of there employees probably dont realize that
There is no reason to let them know whats in the box
I usually use fedex and just print the label out at home and drop the box off on there table

UPS does ship firearms. Like the poster above me, do not tell them what is in the box. I had to jump through hoops because the employees did not even know their own companies policies. Try doing the FedEx route as suggested above. Although it can be quite fun proving the employees wrong by having them look up their regulations and policies in front of you, lol. Avoid UPS, you would end up paying more and shipping to an FFL, if you tell them. Go the FedEx route as suggested above, lol.

Just to emphasize whats already been said here, take your time packing it and include lots of packing material (bubble wrap etc.) unless you like canted sights or something. Also you may want to write the destination address on an area seperate from where the sticker goes on. If (or when) the sticker gets ripped off by some apathetic employee, at least they will be able to identify the package to send it on its destination.

The last package I recieved had a boot print on it, it looked as if someone had stomped on it.

                  Good luck!

I have never had a problem shipping a rifle with UPS. Just make sure you go to one of their hubs and not one of the UPS stores.

It is a violation of Federal law to ship a firearm interstate to a non-FFL without telling the carrier. Maybe the OP does have an FFL. If he does then that law doesn't apply here. Even so, it is still a good idea to notify the carrier that you are shipping a firearm since they all have policies that you are required to notify them. If the package gets damaged and you didn't notify them that you were shipping a firearm then they might deny your claim for violating their terms.

                        +1

If you are mailing to a non-FFL, you must declare so. But then you'll have to deal with the stupid employees. I had the manager of a post office tell me that only a FFL was allowed to mail long guns. I filed a complaint. The response I received made no sense. I told them I was shipping a rifle receiver. The response adressed handguns. These people are just stupid.

I thought that I read that one could mail the rifle to yourself via USPS and you do not have to be an FFL. I do believe you have to inform them though.

Yep. And you can even send a handgun to yourself if you use a common carrier like UPS.
