A Bad Day at the Range

This guy just had a very BAD day.

    SHERIFF'S REPORT
The following was compiled from reports prepared by the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.

ARREST -- A 38-year-old Willits man was booked into jail by the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office after an alleged shooting with assault rifles, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said.

Gregory Chaniot was arrested on suspicion of possession of an assault rifle at a location in the 5000 block of Black Canyon Road, Willits.

About 4:50 p.m. Thursday, Sheriff's deputies got a call about shooting on Canyon Road and arrived to find three men target shooting, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said that one rifle was warm and smoking from having been fired recently. Deputies said that the men possessed three illegal assault rifles, five semi-automatic pistols, 28 high-capacity magazines to hold bullets and more than 800 rounds of ammunition. A switchblade knife was also found.

According to the Sheriff's Office Chaniot said that the guns belonged to him. He was taken to Mendocino County Jail on a bail set at $10,000.

I know for a fact that the DA's office is up-to-date on OLLs and high capacity magazine possession, but I don't know if individual deputies are.

I would bet, no fixed mag on rifles with evil features, along with 20/30 round magazines. Having a switch blade, if it really is a switch blade, and not creative writing, was not smart.

I'd be interested to see if the 'swithblade' is actually a spring assisted knife.

Believe it or not, I have seen some AR rifles with Prince 50's with screws backed out taken in for assault weapons. Never seen bullet button AR's taken, except I heard about it, about a San Diego agency.

Most common assault rifles I see come across my office: 1. AR's and AK's, OLL or named, with regular magazine release. 2. OLL's with Prince50's with NO set screws.

It'll be interesting to see how this one plays out. I hope they lawyer'd up and didn't tell the cops anything.

Another by-product of people wanting to do what they want to do and not follow the law.

It really does surprise me the number of people I meet who are willing to put their family's welfare at stake for that very reason. The laws may be BS, but the consequences can be severe.

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

Guys didn't have time to disassemble their 10+ cap mags. My guess is these guys were shooting illegal configs, not just some BB confusion.

I think we're jumping the gun here. This doesn't sound right. How does one person have 3 'illegal assault weapons' 5 pistols, and a for all intents and purposes, a folding utility knife and 800 rounds of ammo... which are according to the article as 'owned by him' (meaning they probably had proof of ownership) and not be aware of the law. The mags could of been owned before the ban.

I mean if he had a cache full of illegal weapons, he probably would of ran or something. Thats enough to get you thrown in jail for well over 20 years.

These could of been OLLs, BBs, or even MMGs.

if he had bad intentions, i think he would of done something, but on the other hand he mite of been one of them guys that didnt install a bb and thought he could get away.
