Preferred 9mm ammo for range and home defense?

Hello all,

Just picked up a SAO 9mm Sig P226 Legion (gifted) brand new and would like some input on what kind of rounds to use with it.

Lighter 115 grain brass (or cheaper aluminum) for the range? I'm actually leaning towards 124s because I think I've heard that's the sweet spot.

Hollow points for home defense? Should these be lighter or heavier in your opinion?

Having limited deep understanding of ammo, I would also appreciate any tips for buying, size, tip, grain weight, etc that is important to know.

What are considered the standards that would be easy to find in any shop that I can buy in bulk, as I don't think you can buy ammo online in CA without having it shipped to a store, and most stores don't want to do that because they don't have the storage space to accomodate that service.

Range ammo used to be cheap. Now it's not. I personally like 124 S&b as range fodder but anything I can find under $200 i grab a case now and then. For the range, cause will work (unless your range doesn't allow aluminum .)

For self defense, HST is what I use. I go Seth 147 grain due to (at least in my mind) have less of a chance of over penatration.

I would suggest doing a Google search of lucky gunner, they did an indepth review. The FBI set up standards for what the consider minimum requirements.

For range, any 9mm that you can obtain. Your P226 Legion will not discriminate.

For HD, Federal 147 HST.

Reloads from the Gun Show for the range, Surefire, LAX Ammo, Ammo Bros, Miwal etc
Federal HST for defensive use.

- no right answer

- for CCW I use a 9mm revolver (ruger LCR)
- 115g h/p

- I like fast lite bullets... but again this is for ccw for ME

- you might like slower heaver bullets
- it's all what you like baby... do what works for you

- at home you might need to go through some barriers, so heavier might work better for you..

For range, usually factory load 115 or 124 gr FMJ ..what ever is on sale ..

For defense, I have Hornady 124 gr XTP 9mm +p or Speer gold dot.

Range = Whatever FMJ I have on hand in this case a lot of NATO 124g & MaxxTech 115g don't run Aluminum so no thoughts on that.

HD: HST 147g - Critical Duty 135g - Winchester Defend 147g

Also may depend on where you intend to shoot.

Many commercial ranges don't allow aluminum or steel cased ammo.

bimetalic bullets may also be a no go at some ranges or on public land (considered a fire hazard).

If you shoot on public land, please clean up after yourself.

Enjoy your new purchase, and train, train, train!

For range use, I shoot 115 gr FMJ, brass case. I've gotten best results from Federal ammo, and good results from Remington and Mag Tech.

For HD use, I have Federal HST 124, and 147 gr HP's. I run a mag or two every once in an a while for function check in my G17.

If you have not already, please consider a membership in CRPA, and or/ NRA in the fight for our 2A rights.
