    3D printed a brass-sorting filter

Not rocket science..or maybe it is????

Anyways it seemed to work great and held up through about 1000 rounds so far.

This one lets 9mm through so also 5.56/.223 and anything smaller diameter.

Took 2 hours to print, very lightweight, maybe 10% infill and 2 layers top and bottom. Should probably have printed it stronger but I was eager.

I'm going to make an adapter so it can filter between 9mm and 5.56 next

Anyone got clever ideas about how to make it work even better? I'm open to suggestions.

Its 6" square so to use it I just found a nice 6" cube cardboard box and it fits in perfectly. Fill the box with shells, install the filter, then shake away

    Heres the .stl: https://appgenius.icu/wg13soanujglio...aWxlYmluLm5ldA

They make brass sorters that fit on a bucket.

I won a set in a raffle. I need to make some brackets to hold all of them together so you can sort all of them at the same time.

      9, 357, 223, and 45 are easy to pick out. It's 40 vs 9 vs 380 that's alot harder.

You know $36 aint bad actually. I didn't see that price elsewhere although I did see those buckets all over the place.

Oh well its still alot cheaper for me to print them. I am trying to force myself to be on a budget otherwise I will just go nuts and buy all kinds of reloading goodies

I'm wondering if there is any improvement I could make?

One thing I noticed so far is that if you are going to go pick up range brass, sort the brass as soon as you pick it up. Otherwise you get all kinds of nesting issues with 9mm inside 40 s&w inside 44 mag etc.etc..

How does the 9mm 223 differentiation work?

So far this filter let through only 9 and 223/556 (and much smaller stuff) and kept out anything even a little bigger diameter.

              I just use children.

They have little fingers, good eyes and are closer to the ground already.

so am I dumb or does the "shell sorter" buckets system not actually separate 9mm and 223? Because I dont find that all that easy. Yes one is much longer than the other but what am I supposed to do pick them apart by hand? Thats no easier than separating anything else.

No youre correct 9 and 223 fall together. The PITA is sorting 380 from the 9. They make a $22 add in plate that seperates 380. Ill never buy it as it costs 60% of the entire 3 tray package.

9mm and 223 have the same case diameter at .380". The problem isn't really a simple case of making the slots shorter because if the case is standing on end, both cases will fall through.

The grate to separate 9 from 380 cost more because it is manufactured to higher tolerance. 9mm is .380", 380 case is .374". So the greater needs to be 1 human hair thickness smaller than a 9mm to retain it but allow the 380 to pass thru. At 2 hairs smaller, both cases would be retained.

if you have a case feeder put your 9mm and .223 in it and put in the 9mm plate.

                          ???

What is the point of a sorter that can't separate these 9mm and 223? These are very common and the bulk of the sorting job for probably alot of range pickups.

I am trying to brainstorm a hand-sorter (or something VERY simple) that could discriminate between them.

I made one last night and it works okay but needs some improvement.

Its an add-on to the other plate I made. Basically spaces another plate off it by about 12mm, with walls on the outside of each of the slots. This way 9mm can fall through and roll out, but 223 is too tall and cant tilt all the way in.

It does work but is pretty inefficient and needs alot of shaking. Cases can fall in vertically (especially more than one) and then nothing happens because they cant roll out. So you have to keep jostling it so they can try again.

There must be a better way. The two cases are very different so just need to be a little clever here.
