    Where to shoot?

Like many, I just got myself a gun. I was wondering where I could shoot it though since all the ranges are closed. I live in the bay area, so a vast open area is hard to come by.

I heard about the "BLM" (The Bureau of Land Management). Is this an option?

Where are Californians shooting right now?

I was told not to let new people know about shooting areas because we don't know them and they may end up trashing the place.

There's been a lot of talk both ridiculing new shooters because of the panic and questioning their political stance on gun control when it comes time to vote. I'm sure if you created another account, had a bunch of anti democrat, pro 2nd amendment quotes and memes (all pro gun and maybe even had military service) you'd get members stepping over each other to help you.

Hey all... can we help this new Calgunner out? Are there any members in the Bay Area willing to take this new member shooting and make sure he has a safe and enjoyable experience?

I am down in Southern California or I would be more than happy to do it.

And I'm in Sac, but I have seen a few people drive 3 hours to my shooting location just to enjoy it. I live 1.5 hours away from my favorite shooting area North of Sac.

^ Yes. If currently open on BLM land. Please recognize there are lots of people who are not respectful of shooting locations. So, please clean up after yourself, and above all be overly extra safe.

BTW - Don't you just love it when you are a new person on a forum and some wad tells you to use search.
sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

Now that I'm reloading shotshells I'm picking those up too and I only have ar500 and a target box. That box gets a new shoot n see every once in a while.

If they keep emptying jails just wait at home, the range will come to you.

Just ignore the snarky remarks you get here. Some of the folks here have been shooting since before their mothers conceived them...that's why they know soooo much (oh, and because they have a keyboard and Google).

Yes, BLM lands are good lands to shoot on, assuming the area is open. It would be best to contact your nearest BLM office and buy a map that shows BLM lands and shooting areas nearest to where you live (could not tell by your profile). Check on line and call before you go...they are government employees and are likely not answering calls from taxpayers during this COVID situation. But if you do get ahold of them, they are generally very helpful. I've even had them mark up the map to highlight areas not to shoot, meaning everything else was open.

If you are really new to shooting, go on line and take a web-based gun safety class. They are pretty interesting and are a great investiment of a few hours of time.

Good luck, stay safe, and be safe.

                            In addition:

Do you know the 4 rules of gun safety?
                            Have you learned range etiquette?
Has someone taught you how your gun functions , how to grip it, how to keep your finger off the trigger , how to shoot it, and how to clear a malfunction?

Those kind of things are why going with a knowledgeable person if classes aren’t available are a really good thing. I bit off more than I can chew with a home renovation project but maybe someone else will take you . It’s fun to shoot with other people who are into shooting . The people who want to shoot one box and go home , not so much.

I was looking at gun ranges and https://www.sacvalley.org/ seems to be really solid. I think I may go to that one when it re-opens.

Where have those that drive 3 hours been shooting? At your local BLM?

I've shoot before when I was in the Air Force and when i got out. I just never owned my own gun(s).

Yes, I know the basic safety rules and follow them.
I've only ever shoot AR style rifles. This new gun I bought is an MDR.I don't know how properly clear a malfunction or even clear the chamber. I've been looking at a ton of youtube videos though so I am learning a little about the rifle. Hopefully it gets here soon. Just shooting a pistol won't be as much fun.
