Damn. I forgot I posted months ago, that I would post how I modified my many M&P magazines to work in the Ruger PC9 carbine. The M&P mags are very close to the Ruger magazine form and size. All we're doing is milling...or drilling and filing a slot for the magazine retention doodad in the Ruger magwell. My M&P's seem to measure ~.854" wide, so put the slot feature on C/L of your magazines.
I had the luxury of using a milling machine where I could get some high RPM's, and use a .078" carbide endmill to make the small corner radii of the slot. They could totally could be filed out. As you know, the magazines are a pretty sloppy fit in Ruger's magwell anyway.
I did disassemble the mags, and used a table stop at the location shown in attachment for exact repetition of feature (.700" off this surface). The Smith and Wesson magazines are made from a semi-hard sheet metal, but slow and careful will yield ya good results.
