Ammo background check - ownership of matching gun is NOT CHECKED

    Hi all,

Does anyone know if the ammo background check verifies that you own/registered the gun that you're buying ammo for?

In other words, can I go buy ammo for my wife's 9mm, or does she have to do that herself? She has a 9mm registered to her, but I only have a .40 registered to me.

I'm also thinking about buying another gun, but I want to get some ammo for it now since a lot of places are selling out.

For reference, I have bought a handgun for myself in the past year, so I have already passed that background check before.

    Thanks

At this time it does not check caliber vs registered guns.

AFAIK, you don't even need to own a gun to buy ammo.

No. You do not have to own a firearm in caliber you are buying. Idiotic FUD from someones hairdresser.

At this time, you can buy any ammo you want, regardless of whether you own a weapon in that caliber, or not.

You just need to have a weapon registered in your name in AFS, and provide the ID/Documentation required by the ammo vendor.

            Got it. Thanks.

I saw something saying that you had to own a registered firearm to buy ammo, so there seems to be some misinformation depending on where you look.
