I was wondering how long does it take to hear back from the DOJ once you sent our your firearm release form?

BY LAW, the DOJ BOF has 30 days to complete the BGC and notify the applicant in writing, of the LEGR findings.
The typical DOJ dodge was built in. See underlined. DOJ's delays are all INTERNAL. There are NO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND THEIR CONTROL.33865. (a) When the Department of Justice receives a completed application pursuant to Section 33850 accompanied by the fee required pursuant to Section 33860, it shall conduct an eligibility check of the applicant to determine whether the applicant is eligible to possess a firearm.
(b) The department shall have 30 days from the date of receipt to complete the background check, unless the background check is delayed by circumstances beyond the control of the department. The applicant may contact the department via the California Firearms Application Reporting System (CFARS) to inquire about the reason for a delay.
And the last sentence of the code is an absofreak'nlutely JOKE. The same DOJ that is responsible for the delay. Does NOT EVER tell an applicant why their application is delayed.
And even if they DENY the applicant. They still have the option to simply state the ubiquitous "OTHER". As their reason. AND NEVER TELL APPLICANT WHY.Comment

I called in 3 months after they received my LEGR and the rep said since it was over 90 days, she would send a note about it to her supervisor. I asked if that expedites the process and she said no. I'm now on my 5th month of waiting.
I wish they would add a way to check the status online or even transmit the approval directly to the LE holding the property.Featureless Long guns & FW Mags confiscated 8/30/19

Took 4 months from DOJ after home invasion shooting
Took less than three months for sheriff's department to release my firearm from evidence after I had to shoot a home Intruder. Took doj over 4 months to give approval for the sheriff's department to release it to me after submitting the legr form. And you have to pay a fee to get the legr form approved or denied by doj, even if you did everything legally, like protect your family from an insane person who broke into two houses and two locked doors in my home.Comment

You can see if LEO will release it to an FFL to hold if it gets to June. Not sure if a LEGR is required for that and not sure if it would even help you depending what the firearm is.UG Imports - Fremont, CA FFL - Transfers, New Gun Sales

You should send a letter to the CHP station who has the firearms detailing that you have applied for the LEGR. Include copies of the application.
Send it to the person who gave you the "till June" date.
Demand they hold your firearms until CA DOJ provides the release. You could also hand deliver the letter.
Keep copies. Also check in monthly and let the person responsible know that the delay is because CA DOJ has not returned the LEGR release..Poke'm with a stick!

+1 on the letter. It took the DOJ 3 months to get me my LEGR back in 2015.
The DOJ delayed mine because "there was an arrest on my record" (I was arrested but not charged with any crime back in 2003). I was forced to disclose otherwise very private info to them in order to get it approved.
I wish I had money, I would have sued the crap out of them for that.
While I waited on my LEGR, I sent the Sheriff's dept that had my gun, a certified letter stating that I was going through the process to get my gun back.
Once I got my LEGR they made an appointment to release it to me and it was all good.
So glad I am out of CA now and don't have to deal with that nonsense. My gun would never have been confiscated in the first place here in WY.Comment

The DOJ BOF changed their phone menu system so now I cannot even get a live person. I spent over an hour mapping out every option they have. I used the CA DOJ website to file a complaint against the DOJ BOF. I have also contacted my local elected officials for assistance.Featureless Long guns & FW Mags confiscated 8/30/19

On top of all this, if you purchaced any long-gun prior to Januray 1 2014 you have to fill out a BOF 4542a form $19 per firearm to officially declare the firearm is yours. I'm not sure how that will fare to any AR-15s in LE custody. Will they require photos to prove it's CA compliant or not. There is an online site you can do all this BTW to avoid the snail-mail route.Comment
