Hearing protection for HD.

I know that hearing protection is a must for shooting. I keep two pairs.
I keep a 12g and a .40 around for HD when i'm home.
I did some research about the kind of decibels that each caliber reaches.
Amazing stuff.. you can go deaf shooting just about any caliber there is..some cause more damage than others..

So here it is..its night time..you and your beloved ones are asleep.. suddenly you hear a noise that for sure you know is an intruder..ok..you grab your weapon of choice, shotgun, rifle, or pistol..

Are you going to reach for your hearing protection.?
Doesn't that knock off one of your senses.. you need all five and/or sixth. lol

Just curious to know how other Calgunners would defend their homes and not go deaf..

For reals..I understand..thats not gonna be the first thing on my mind neither.. but really, safety first..and i'm not trying to blow my ears out. I'm not trying to blow my wifes, or kids ears out..
Its just if worst comes to worst.. WTF...what to do...?

You likely won't have time to use hearing protection. Even if you did, as you stated, it would affect your being able to hear the intruder. If the house is dark, you're going to want to be able to hear.

Maybe it'll be like hunting. You're so pumped up you don't really hear it. Me personally, I don't think of hearing protection when it comes to home invasion.

You could always get some electronic muffs. Turn the gain up and listen to the BG breath in the next room.

Keep a set of whatever hearing protection device you use next to your home defense weapon of choice.

I used to do this but I haven't lately, lazy. Gotta find the darn things, rarely use them, usually just use plugs at the range, easier when shooting long guns. I do keep body armor next to bed sometimes though.

I have given the hearing loss/flash and blast in small home stuff some thought though and I generally won't use things like for example,short barrle .357mags with hot ammo for HD.

I do like my hearing and I don't want to be disoriented even more than necessary for follow up shots and multiple intruders.

Not deaf, but you will definitely suffer hearing damage if you fire a long gun in an enclosed space without hearing protection.

Electronic earmuffs are definitely the way to go on this one. Save your hearing, and give yourself a significant tactical advantage at the same time.

This of course assumes you have the chance to get everything in order before the bad guys present themselves. Nice if it happens, but don't count on it.

If you have to dose off a few rounds in the house in defense of your family's lives, what little damage there is to your hearing is going to seem pretty insignificant to still being alive after the encounter.

You may not have time to get hearing protection. Besides, don't you think that knowing (most likely hearing) where the intruder(s) is would be necessary. Wearing ear muffs may hinder you while you "clear" your house. If you practiced enough and hit them with one shot, then you may not need hearing protection.

I would not want to wear hearing protection even the electronic kind because I think you need to have your normal senses working to keep the advantage.
Also when you fire the shot you know where the bad guy is already so having a bit of ringing wont be too big an issue
