I would ask your friend if he is shooting underpowered craptastic Russian ammo. If he is, I'm almost certain of it, have him buy some quality brass cased stuff.

He knows all that and was asking if it would be ok to leave the gas on "Adverse"

There is no reason to, the setting is used for a reason, no use over gassing if not needed?

Honest answer: It's probably not a good idea long term. Your friend is mid grade gas in a premium car to save a few cents a round. If it was the end of the world and it's all he had to shoot, well that's that. Besides potentially wearing action parts more quickly, steel cased ammo frequently has a copper washed projectile. This leads to faster barrel wear. Replacing an AR barrel is cheap, I'm guessing an Aug isn't the same.

If the rifle was designed to be fired on "adverse" all the time, why would the designers have included more than one gas setting?

Anyways, I have an AUG as well. I only fire quality, new factory ammo through it...because it's a bullpup and the action is _right beside my head_ when I shoot it. ( Which is no guarantee of course, but I'd rather stack the odds in my favor. )

I was curious and it seems a replacement barrel is about $450 before shipping. Aug barrels aren't cheap!

The standard rule with gas adjustable rifles is just enough gas to work the
weapon reliably with a particular ammo. Emphasis on Reliably.

Will it damage the rifle? No

Will it stress the rifle? Yes

Will it wear out more quickly? Not in the average shooter's lifetime

Operating springs may need replaced more frequently and things might shake loose. Keep in mind the adverse setting brings a sluggish arm back to normal functional cycling so in those conditions the jarring and action acceleration caused by more gas to the system are dampened by whatever external condition is causing the arm to be sluggish. Adverse setting for a clean arm is is like punching something instead of shoving something. One is more violent.
