    First steel target funny time

I got a 4" steel target and got some chain from home depot that was pretty heavy-looking, to me anyway, and thick carriage bolts. I hung it up 100 yards away and shot it with a .308

KABOOM, it exploded off the chain, one of the bolts had the head rammed through the mounting hole and one chain tore like it was paper, leaving it hanging by a single chain. I shot it again and it sheered the other bolt and broke the chain.

I am gonna hang it again with rubber strapping instead, and maybe move it out to 200 yards.

What is 4"... If it's a 4" round, it will probably explode a lot more than not. Try some 2-3 firehose to hang it. I shoot 10" -15" rounds with my 308, 5.56 and Mosin, those hold up well because of the weight..

4 inch diameter circle... that's a good point - it's so light it just gets flicked around. A heavier target wouldn't get bucked around quite as much. I just ordered a piece of rubber strap that's like 3 inches wide, I'll see how that does. It was only $5

Firehose does work well, though I have only used it for pistol calibers.

Where can I get some bits of firehose? Did the fire station have old hose?

Check with your local fire station. Hose gets retired a lot (damaged, burned, fails pressure testing), so they may have some for free. (Hint fire fighters love donuts).

Often time you can get old- retired hose from the local FD for free.

Even if someone shoots the hose, it holds up for a while.

I use grade 8 bolts (the gold colored ones) A standard bolt will sheer its head, never had a grade 8 bolt do that, and I've even hit the bolt before

I got some at a fire station for free.

I did have to outrun several firefighters. They apparently did not like me "serving myself" from their firetruck.
