Picked up this spent shell at our shooting spot

I'm guessing a piece of the casing was still in the tube? I didn't think something like this could happen, it would have been so far out of battery.

Open bolt SMG. They fire from a open bolt and are slam fire. It looks like the round fired just before the round was fully chambered then the bolt closed causing the funny rim.

I concur.

Possibly caused by a reload of a "glocked" case with a bulge at the web. That held case short of battery at ignition.

Maybe. I've shot, and seen shot, many thousands of 9mm from open bolt mg's and never seen anything like that.

I’d say 9 in the wrong chambered gun. But I’d be guessing.

Had something similar years ago when shooting a G19 and G23 side by side. Accidentally put the 9mm mag in the .40 cal gun. Fire few rounds fine but casings looked identical.
