Looking at two gun buys. Thoughts?

Looking on Gunbroker, two caught my eye to buy. Tell me what you think.

H&R M1 Garand in 5.56. Comments I found so far say not good, wimpy caliber in a big boy frame. Too heavy for the caliber.

Ruger mini-14 target with aftermarket ambi stock. I'm a southpaw.
Known for inaccuracy, but target version is better, but thumb-hole stock may make in illegal here in California.

I am attracted to by one or the other, but leery about down sides.

Well, since Garands were never made in 5.56, I'd love to see how they converted it AND the en-bloc clips!

I have read they did, by H&R. Not sure myself, taking listing at face value.

The Target Mini's came in Hogues here in California. I got a screaming deal on one, but it was a crummy shooter. Had it cut down to 16" and put it in a laminate stock. Except for the barrel and weight (and thumbhole stock where allowed) they are exactly the same as any other 580 series Mini.

Thank you Drew. I had hoped that the Target version had addressed the accuracy issues. Okay then, that's off the list.

M1 says 5.5 million serial number. Not 5.56 caliber. Its 30-06.

The listing shows the chambering as 30-06. The "5.5 mil" is probably in reference to the serial number range.

I'd suggest "re-attraction therapy," but I think that's a felony in CA now.

Tanker Garand conversion in .308 for the the win.

If you MUST have 5.56 though, stick with a regular ol' AR-15. Or Bren 805.

An M1 in 308 is never a win. They work better with the longer 30-06 they were designed for.

Mini 14s are fun to plink with. Get both.

Ruger says the Target mini 14 is the only mini that you Cannot feed 5.56, ie .223 only.
