I also had lasik in 2003, vision was great until I turned 55, now my near vision
is beginning to blur. I wear progressive shooting glasses so I can see the front sights of my rifles and handguns and also the distant targets.
I'm also an optometrist that has examined several shooters and prescribed the correct lenses for their needs. Some older patients have developed cataracts and had to consult with my colleague (ophthalmologist) to have the cataracts removed.

He was located in SF, but as far as I can tell moved down south. So I had to continue my search and found Dr Zheng up north.
I actually called this clinic. They are NOT the same Dr Norman Wong, the optometrist that wrote that article on StarReloaders.

He's a shooter, he knows how to shoot, competes USPSA, and has training pistols of varying lengths to use during the eye exam.

He takes the time to make it all work the best that can probably be done, and I've found WAY better than just going to an eye doctor and getting generic reading/computer or distance glasses.

For instance my set up is for pistol sight picture on my right eye, and far distance on my left (so I can see bullet hole in the targets down range).

Whatever you need to shoot, and whatever you need your vision to be he'll work with you and take the time to figure it out.
        Brilliant!
After cataract surgery, my eyes are now like that.

As per a separate thread that I started in the OC Chapter

I visited David Kirschen late yesterday with my match pistol Glock 34!

We tried out different configuration of lenses that is a good enough balance for being able to see (and focus) on the front sight while having sufficient recognition of the target. Standing in my action shooting stance - we did a few distances, as well, 5~10-yd (average range for local action shooting).

After about 20-mins, got my Rx and would have some lenses made. Would see from there...

And for reference, here is his clinic in Brea, CA:

Trusted Local Eye Doctor in Brea, CA at Customized Vision Care offers a large selection of eyewear, eye care services & contact lenses. Call (714) 529-2470!

          428 S Brea Blvd, Brea, CA 92821

Good staff with excellent service, as well.

PS: Dr Kirschen was actually pulling my leg when he blurted out why I keep checking the condition of my firearm whenever I put it down/picking it back up as if there were "gremlins that could have loaded ammo."

The nice lady over the phone told me that many many actually called them asking for Dr. Wong... because of that article...

It would have been nice actually since I am closer to Downey.

In my case, whenever one of his staff goes in front of the muzzle - I go into SUL. He told me to stop it as everyone knows what we were doing... I just looked at him and said "safety habit..."

He set up a sample lens of the correction to show me how the sights or red dot would look. Cool!
                  Same here! Indeed cool...!

A few years ago I had a prescription done for a Champion shooting frame lens.

I called the office I was going to and asked if I could bring my Morini air pistol in. After a bit of explanation that it wasn't a firearm (though I suspect that would have been allowed as well), I had them do all the testing and such with one of the actual pistols I'd be using.

My wife had inserts made at our prior optometrist. Got the ok from the doctor beforehand to bring in the pistol. Just to be on the extra safe side, she only brought the slide in.

Unfortunately, this optometrist, not being a shooter, didn't fully understand the need to get a hard focus on the front sight, so the results were less than optimal. She still needed to tilt her head a bit to get a good focus on the front sight.

It's refreshing going to an optometrist who knows exactly what you need!
                      Thanks again Dr. Zheng!!!

FWIW, when I finally decided to make an appointment with Dr. Wong in S.F., he had retired! I had done a bunch of reading about this, and it's the same principal as getting "bifocal" contact lenses. Dominant eye set for close up reading, and sub dominant eye, set for distance. The only difference for a shooter is the the reading distance is now front sight distance. The brain will adjust to this. So, with my last new Rx for glasses, I went to the usual eye guy, and asked if he could make my right lense focus at where the front sight would be (I had explained what I wanted) and we guessed at how far a typical front sight would be from my eye, and he wrote the Rx as I had asked. I went to Costco for the glasses, and low and behold, it does fix the issue for me. Each and every time I put the glasses on at the range, my brain has to readjust again, but it does work.

Someone made the point earlier in this thread they would prefer to have glasses that would be worn all the time, and this makes perfect sense to me, however, in my case it would be difficult to read a book as it's closer than the dominant eye lense is focused for (the front site).

So my takeaway is, this works to tighten up my groups a bit, and I'll take it! Just my $.02.
