How to tell production date on lower

An out of state friend has a PWA lower with a 4 digit serial number, how can he tell the date? I have read that PWA was had some relation to LMT, PWA desolved and LMT started from PWA. Anyone have any truth to that?

Call the manufacture with the serial number.

Not sure if they would be willing to take the time for someone just being curious.
