Set up a target at 3 yards. Take two shots. If you hit the bull, move the target to 5 yards, and take two more shots. If you miss one, or both, at 3 yards, try again.
Take two shots at five yards. If you hit the bull, move the target to 7 yards, and take two shots. If you miss one, or both, at 5 yards, try again.
Following the same procedure, shoot at 9 and 12 yards.
After evaluating how you did, and what you need to do make it better on the next string of fire, load a new mag and repeat the drill.
My friend calls this the aim small--shoot small drill. It really helped me a great deal when I first started shooting a semi-auto 9mm.

Dry Fire Training
Practice gun handling at home. No ammo. No range fees. All free.
Trigger control - just point the gun at a white surface and practice pulling the trigger without the sights moving
Draw - again, against a white wall, draw the gun at get a sight picture. Don't pull the trigger. Focus should be on get a clean draw with a good grip and the gun should come up with the sights aligned... called indexing.
Reloads - practice your reloads with good trigger discipline - finger out of the trigger well during the reload. Start with the gun on target with a solid grip. Then start your reload. End with the gun back on target with a solid grip.
Live Fire - at the range
Groups - at various distances, up to 25 yards. Goal is to get as tight a group as possible with no time limit.
Doubles - fire 2 consecutive shots as fast as you can. Wait till the sights settle. Now fire another 2 shots fast. Do this for 5 pairs. Goal is to get a tight group. 3" at 7 yards.
Can't recall name of this drill... if your range doesn't allow doubles. Chamber a round then remove the mag. Now fire the round and them fire a second shot. This second shot will be dry. 2 goals. First is to learn how to shoot a 2nd consecutive shot at speed. Second goal is to fire the dry shot with no preingnition movement of your sights.
Low Ready to 1st Shot - you probably can't draw at your range so start with the pistol at low ready. Bring it up on target and fire as soon as you have a sight picture as good as the shot requires.
Strong/Weak Hand - just what it implies. Shoot groups with your strong hand only and weak hand only.
Clearing Malfunctions - insert a dummy round in each of your mags, randomly. Mix up your mags. Now shoot groups. When you get to the dummy round, the round won't go off or cycle. Learn to immediately tap and rack. That's hit the mag with the meat of your palm, rack the slide to eject the dummy round and chamber the next and require grip and sight picture, fire the next shot.

If you can draw and fire at your range, practice it every visit. Your two shot drill will work great.
Home defense lets you have the gun out and up before you fire. Concealed carry means that you'll have to draw and fire. You can't draw your weapon just in case, you have to have cause and need to use deadly forces.Frank

Take a class or two, you'll learn what skills you are weak in, drills to provide the practice and to start learning how to analyze your results.
Dave Spaulding and Aaron Cowan have some great info on You Tube mostly geared toward CCW. They both have videos outlining what they feel are essential skills and mindset for CCW folks which are helpful in deciding what to practice.
Rob Leatham, Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers have good drills, also on You Tube.
Any drill can be set to your current skill level, if a distance and par is given, shorten the distance and add some par till you consistently can accomplish what you set for yourself then keep adding distance and shrinking par.

1) as much as I can while still being fun
2) 21 feet to 30 feet... torso target, the goal is to hit it anywhere with all rounds not bullseye
- i try to pace versus race. one onethousand, two onethousand, three onethousand... slow down the seconds and make each action county
- there is no magic answer
- simply get familiar with what you got..

Take a class, where you can draw and shoot and move and shoot. Start shooing IDPA and action pistol. You can spend your life standing at the firing line and when it counts, you won’t be standing a perfect stance with a target in front of you.The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either.

The OP has already taken a class and is in the process of deciding which handgun he wants to purchase by renting some and getting range time.
