S&W 629 Deluxe? Anyone got one? How do you like it? How are the factory grips? My 29 classic came with trash grips.

Had a 629DX for a bunch of years. Standard Hogue rubber grip with backstrap exposed. Changed to Hogue grip from S&W X frames, where backstrap is covered with rubber grip material, much nicer.
Hogue rubber grips were nothing special, but they worked as well as anything else.
Grips are easy to change out, why would you let this determine whether you buy the gun or not?Comment

Turners has sold them for years.

That grip shape looks like Altamont's "Batelur", and the laminated walnut Batelur grips I put on my J-Magnum-frame .357 Model 60-15 sure helped take the recoil impulse from the web of my thumb/forefinger to the palm of my hand, making .357 in that little gun tolerable, almost pleasant.
While I don't cotton to the overall visual proportion of that grip style, they may really work for you..

I have one like this. it is the Talo Deluxe 629 with the 6.5 " barrel and it is a great revolver. The grips are very classy and made or rosewood.

I wouldn't let the it determine whether I buy the gun or not. I'm going to get one at some point. But I love the look of it with the factory wood grips. Just curious if they were any good. Going to get a pair of altmont cokes for my 29 Classic as the factory grips are far too skinny.Had a 629DX for a bunch of years. Standard Hogue rubber grip with backstrap exposed. I have a 629 3".
Here is the deal: You pay for recoil in proportion to the load. You can mitigate the recoil with technique and stocks. (Insert Herretts Stocks Jordan Trooper stocks advertisement here). Jordan Troopers make a huge difference in how the gun feels under recoil.
Federal 44 American Eagle hit me hard because the 629 3" has Ahrends stocks on it. My 4" has Jordan Troopers. They are literally night and day in feeling. There is nothing you can really do when steel is smashing into the web of your hand; it's just going to sting and that is the way it is. Jordan Troopers make a huge difference because the recoil is redirected away from the web of the hand.
Buy the gun since it's faster out of the holster. That is why I bought it. I'm sure it's an amazing 44 Special shooter, but I keep firing magnums out of it despite the awful Ahrends stocks. It produces lots of BOOM and FLASH, just like Magnums should be (Remington UMC 180's and Magtech).Last edited by tomrkba; 01-08-2020, 7:47 PM.Biden's

Are you talking about the Classic DX with the extra sight blades and the wood grip?
I have a 5" 629 Classic.
It came with the rubber Hogue grip.
I swapped out to laminated wood grips.
They might have been from Ace or directly from S&W.
This was back in the early 90's so I don't remember.Randall Rausch

Update: I’ve saved up the money. And now I’m trying to talk myself out of it. I have a 4” model 29 classic. I keep hearing that the 3” is deluxe is perfect. Am I’m even going to notice a difference? Or will I just have two of the same gun. Can a man even have too many 44s?
I should probably just save that money for real needs?Last edited by Clickjack; 01-27-2020, 3:14 PM.Comment
