How many of these CA DOJ background checks are for ammo, and since July this year?

The numbers presented in the article are based on NICS data and are nationwide, which is why the quote in the OP begins with...

The FBI is handling a surge in background checks this year...
      ...not "CA DOJ background checks."

I don't think the California ammunition background checks use NICS; i.e., I believe the FBI told California, as they did with New York when they passed ammo background checks, to pound sand.

They haven't counted any of my 2018 or 2019 purchases because Texas FFLs don't need a BGC for LTC holder purchases. Also, no FFL or BGC for FTF in Texas so none of those counted either.

Every one of those purchasers should join the NRA. But, most won't.

I re-up at least once a year. Every gun show I go to has a booth to sign up, skip the ticket line and get a discounted ticket. Sometimes I end up with 2 or three memberships, sometimes my wife or kid get signed up and sometimes it's a buddy who starts getting a free subscription to America's First Freedom. I also signed up a virulently anti-gun coworker once; he was so pissed I could never cop to it.

Truly good news is a vast number of firearms sales still happen with no BGC. Many states have exemptions for concealed and other permit holders as well as PPT sales.

The Rich Leaders of the NRA can just get more money from all these gun companies selling products. They should know where their bread is buttered. More laws equals less they sell.

I dont want a made in china flashlight with my membership renewal. WTF is wrong with the NRA?

FBI posts big Black Friday gun check numbers; second-largest single day in program history

The FBI fielded more than 200,000 background checks on Black Friday gun purchases, continuing a steady surge this year following a series of mass shootings that have renewed calls for more restrictive gun laws.

In all, the bureau posted 202,465 checks Friday, an 11% increase from last year and falling just short of the single-day record: 203,086 in 2017...
