    AR-10/LR-308 Upper in 7.62x54r

I have contemplated building an upper in 7.62x54R for an AR-10 platform as a fun project. I am also trying to gage how much interest something like this would garner.

    What do you guys think?

I can't think of a less fun gun to build. Just about any other cartridge that would fit that platform will outperform the 7.62x54.

Besides that big rim making feeding so much more difficult, it would also require opening up the face of the bolt to over .570" which means that the extractor also has to be reworked.

7.62x54 will not fit into a 308 AR magazine well so eliminate the 308 AR platform right away and start by designing a new upper and lower receiver set which will be a different AR platform.
You might as well design for 30-06 as that would be MUCH more popular than 7.62x54.

While you are designing the lower, figure out a magazine that will feed the cartridge.
Since you are making a new lower, you can make it accept some off-the-shelf magazine.
Your next challenge will be to design a new bolt which will fit the 7.62x54 rim and figure out how you are going to get the rimmed cartridge to both headspace and feed reliably into the chamber.

Just go buy a PSL and be done with it.
      All the problems are solved.

Buy a Nemo Omen in .300 Win Mag.

        You're welcome.

The AR10 platform will accommodate .300 WSM or .300 RSAUM, but anything longer requires a new platform like the Nemo listed above or Noreen Bad News in .338 Lapua Mag.

If it existed and the price was comparable to one in 308, I'd be interested. But...it doesn't and it won't and it can't be.

yeah, was just about to say this. making it belt fed is about the only way it’ll work unless it’s a 5 round mosin-nagant style magazine.

would rather get another AR-10 in 308 than one in 54r

One negative I should mention about the PSL. After 20 rounds or so, give it a 5-10 minute break. That thin barrel heats up fast and you'll get stringing and flyers if you don't let it rest. Despite that, it is an excellent rifle and a joy to shoot!

                      I don't have an AR10 so I can't make any comparisons.

Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.
