I just had to provide my SSN to get a real ID. This included entering it into their online application and bringing my SS card with me to the DMV..

I got pulled over for doing a little over 50 in a 40 zone around 10 years ago. The officer after talking on his radio started to act like he was in "quick draw" mode. I left my hands on the steering wheel with the fingers up. He gave off a very real vibe that he would blow me away if I made a sudden move.

He never asked me for permission to search the vehicle, he just circled and kept looking at the different parts of my vehicle's interior while in his "quick draw" crouch. It was the last time I was pulled over and the only time in my life that an officer acted like that. I got a speeding ticket and was on my way.

Friends I know on that department say that gun information is not given over the radio, but something was "up" about that stop.

I am curious as to how they know now. I consented to a search with no problem. Regarding the "military style" firearm all I did was buy a lower a few years ago that I am planning on assembling in a few years after I retire and leave this state. I ended up getting a citation for an inoperative license plate lamp.

                  This, absolutely.

                  Quick story,

My brother (Ret Riverside Sheriff) and I were driving home from Portland a couple years back. I'm driving his sedan which is black and slightly lowered with aftermarket wheels. We left Portland late and decided to drive till we crossed the border....we also took PCH.

The last 4 small towns we drove through between 11:00pm - 1:00am we got pulled over in EACH one. That's FOUR times in less than 2 hours.

It got to the point where it was comical.

Here comes the next town....think we're gonna get pulled over AGAIN?

And sure enough....car gets behind us and lights us up.

The last town he was parked in a gas station. As we pass we see him pull out. No way. Yep, lights come on.

So yeah, reasonable suspicion? Probable cause?

F' that. It's late and there's a car. Lets pull them over.

                    Absolutely sure.

Wonder all you want. But SSN info isn't searchable at all, in any relation to CA DMV related matters.

The requirement to provide SSN info to obtain a real ID is a Federal requirement.

It isn't relevant to what info is available or used by LEO's when searching for DMV drivers or vehicle info through CLETS, which is the computer system used by LEO's in CA to search DMV info.

CA has never used SSN's to query any DMV computer data base.

Don't you love how people on the receiving end of such comments ("I know you have XYZ...") never bother to post their response to the statement.

                      "Yes, I do!"
"Uh, not on me at the moment..."
                      "Depends on your definition"
                      "Who told you that?"
                      "... aaaand?"
                      "So what?!"
"Is that why you pulled me over, officer?"
                      "Bet you do too!"
"Alllll the cool kids have one these days"

Yup, nothing like getting half the story to make a post more interesting and satisfying to read.

That's strange -cause i couldn't renew my license because i'd used my middle name when i signed up for SS - Have to get SS to change my name on card -DMV has a direct connection to SS now
                        And no - i wasn't getting a real id

the last time i was stopped, the officer ran my ID then comes back and asks if i owned an HK, i answered YES, he then asks if it was in the car, i said NO, he gave my ID back and let me go.

but before he let me go, i asked if his system only showed an HK on record and that i had plenty more than just an HK... he shrugged and didn't say anything else. i am now assuming they were just fishing for info or PC.

CFARS. It needs your DL. I choose to register some AWBB long guns instead of neutering them.

Absolutely correct! You run a vehicle in CLETS, all you'll get back is the registered owner's or lessee's name, address, make and BTM (body type model) and possibly lien info.

You won't get any personal info (let alone firearms) from running a plate or DL in CLETS, not even insurance info.

DMV driver info is either running name and DOB or DL#... No SSN, and you won't get firearms info from DMV.

Nonetheless, this story just doesn't make sense to me...
