I will never consent to search because
1) I have nothing to hide
2) I will not have my rights violated because he wants to look for a non existent crime.

+1. I will be polite. I will be professional. But there is no way in hell that I will EVER help someone who is actively trying to find something to arrest me for.

And you're straight crazy to let a cop search your vehicle if it's ever out of your direct control (like your wife, kid, or a buddy ever drive it) or if you ever give rides to people like your kids and/or their friends. Because lord only knows what might have fallen out of their purse or backpack in the backseat when you were giving them a ride home from school last week.

Yeah, it fails the smell test. And "military type weapon" bit is just too much. Why would the officer run him for everything and the kitchen sink for a "simple" traffic stop?

A cop told me once if you have any RAWs, a "dangerous weapon" warning pops up if they run your license at all. No need to "search" for anything on the inquiry.

Uhh California has a gun database and many agencies can access said database from their patrol cars rather quickly.

If you have purchased handguns since the 90s you are in the database. If you have purchased any long guns since 2014 you are in the database.

Law enforcement can also look up this information at dispatch, so if your neighbor calls the police to complain about your barking dog, you might end up with more than a CSO at your door.

I hear plenty of stops on the scanner, I have heard dispatch return CCW and firearms info from nothing more than a plate being called in.

Like I said, it probably depends on area, time of day, circumstance of stop. Dispatch does not always provide the info from AFS on stops in my area, but in some areas they might.

The LEOs could provide more insight in the LE forum, we have had this discussion with some of them before.

Registration checks on vehicle plates in California do not include drivers license numbers in the return. All that shows is name and address of the RO. as well are legal and registered owners information.

Different states have different capabilities. Ca CCW info isn't attached to any DMV record.

Got pulled over last night at about 3:00 a.m. near my house on the way home from work. Early in the encounter the officer tells me he knows I own a "military style" firearm but I can't remember if he said it right after he stopped me or after he ran my drivers license. I am curious as to how they know now. I consented to a search with no problem. Regarding the "military style" firearm all I did was buy a lower a few years ago that I am planning on assembling in a few years after I retire and leave this state. I ended up getting a citation for an inoperative license plate lamp.

You obviously don't watch LivePD, they stop lots of those dangerous law breaker with the ole' license plate (tag) lights not working. It then usually turns to "I think I smell "pot", bring out the dog!

Maybe you already explained this but what was his reason to search you and why did you allow it? You are aware that if they don't have a real reason they will "ask" to search but you can decline.
