Hello Everyone,
Before proceeding, I want to point out that this is intentionally a very subjective conversation. There is no right or wrong. So no Ford vs Chevy vs Citoren please.
I believe most would agree that when people are introduced to firearms, they are completely overwhelmed by the numbers and names associated with calibers. And while they don't do it intentionally, the people that are introducing them to firearms can often ramble on about all kinds of calibers with no point of reference for the newbie person. And the new person often ends up thinking that the larger a number sounds the larger the caliber must be, not knowing that often there is a decimal point in front of that number.
If you were to describe some common calibers to person who was new to firearms, what analogies would you use?
For example, I would say that the .308 Winchester is like the Chevy small-block of the centerfire rifle calibers because, like the Chevy SBC, it is a relatively cheap and very common caliber that is widely used; the ammo is in stock in every gun shop; there is tons of reloading data for all kinds of applications, ranging from hunting to military and long-range marksmanship; reloading is easier to get into because there is so much data available; and there is a good chance your buddy has some too.
Any analogies you can think of?

Besides, I can't imagine why you'd have a problem with Americans.
