I'm not a hunter, but it was a muzzle loader, and they recommend a wait of 30 mins to make sure the animal is dead?

When I approach game I've downed, I'm always loaded and ready to rock. You never know when you might have to put another shot into the animal or if another animal wants your kill for themselves. In some places, predators confuse a gunshot with a dinner bell.

      RIP.

Tragic, but a reminder to always be mindful when in nature - deer have the potential for lethality, those horns aren’t just for show!

Second for the - load up again before approaching (or perhaps a bayonet).

          From the article,

            RIP for the hunter

I would have to imagine the deer was not playing "possum" when the hunter approached, it was likely thrashing about - wouldn't that be a reason to approach with caution?
Real question; has anyone approached a deer or other large animal they just knocked down, assumed dead, and have it get up and run away as they approached?

Hunting is considered a sport. He lost. End of story. If you don't like risk, stay home and shoot game animals on the computer.

I approach animals on the ground from the side way from their legs and touch their eye with my rifle's muzzle.

They think the man died of a heart attack. The animal is either sleeping one off after getting knocked down hard with the muzzle loader or dying from puncture or internal bleeding.

Not 30/06. Should have reloaded the muzzleloader and approched cauriously. Paid for that failure with his life.

Based on you're avatar, I would say you know what you are talking about.

I have read lots of stories about the Cape buffalo being so mean that if an elephant had the same disposition one could not hunt it with a shoulder fired weapon!

Any truth to those stories ?

I’m e deer hunter. They can be dangerous and have even gored people during the rut when chasing does. They’re ready to fight anything. There was a guy in Ramona gored by a deer in his yard. He survived. Poking the eyeball and having your gun loaded is the recommended approach.

I had a nice blacktail bare it’s teeth and growl at me several years ago. He was a mature buck that I shot in the neck with a .270. It fell on the spot and wriggled around for about 10 seconds, then went completely limp. When I walked up to it, I grabbed an antler and it essentially growled at me like a dog. I had never seen anything like that and it definitely caught me off guard.
