    Need Advise

I am new to the forum and I am looking for some advise. To give you a little background i grew up around guns of all types. I spent all my summers on my grandfathers farm in Kentucky where I rode a horse and carried a 25 revolver and a Colt 45 Peacemaker. I have grown up and I now am looking for a handgun of my own. I am looking for home protection. My wife and I are taking a concealed handgun class to get more familiar with laws and safety. I see tons of great guns on the market and I am confused. I have a big hand and my wife has a small hand. Does this mean we will both need different guns? I like a 40 or 45 cal. and I think this will be way to much for my wife. Is a 9mm enough stopping power for an intruder? Should I try and stick with a larger caliber? I really like the Beretta px4 storm, Glock, Sig 229. What guns would you recommend for my circumstances? Any help appreciated.

For the wife I would recommend a Browning Hi-power. Excellent firearm. Also, a Beretta 92FS is another good choice. Both 9mm and good for a wife. The beretta is an inch longer and much heavier.

For yourself, go with a 1911, in .45 of course...Springfield armory makes good series 70 type pistols.

I will definitely look into the Browning for the wife. I have handled a 1911 a few times and absolutely loved it! How reliable are they? Why do you recommend the 1911 over the others? Sorry for all the questions just a curious mind. Thanks again.

If this is used for home defense why not go with the fullsize Sig 226. Thats what I have and its giving me no problems at all. I have over 5000 rounds through it with just one jam.
        Please, calm down.

Good catch! I meant the 226 in my statement above. Thanks.

You should get your wife a revolver in 357 (357 and 38) or in 38. Women usually aren't as adept at manipulating automatics as men because of the hand/finger strength involved with cocking, clearing malfunctions, etc.

9mm is totally sufficient defensive round if you like that caliber.

The best thing you and your wife can do is go to the range and shoot many different models and calibers and see what fits you best.

P.S. You are looking for "advice" not "advise".

Big +1. you should be able to get a used revolver for cheap ($300) and if you budget for $1000 you can get a 1911 too . Two pistols are better then one.

Personally, if your wife has small hands, I wouldn't recommend the Beretta 92, it's fairly fat to hold. My wife also has small hands, she's interested in a Kahr single-stack 9mm, they're DAO.

Double Action Only. Meaning that it is going to have a stiffer trigger pull than a Single action gun.

The 1911 is a single action only (or SAO.) Whereas the Sig 226 is a DA/SA.

Just remember, let your wife choose what she likes. Don't do it for her. I thought a Glock 19 would be ideal for my wife but turns out that she can outshoot a few guys at the range with my Para P13-45. Go figure.

Gee, most revolvers I know of allow you to cock the hammer so that you can shoot in single action mode. Granted, there are DAO revolvers, but most I've seen are SA/DA.

Not to mention some of the DAO semi-autos are a lot different from shooting a DA/SA semi or revolver.

+1 to having the wifey choose her own pistol.
