Why? What would a pre-64 model 70 offer the OP an admitted novice hunter, over a modern lightweight rifle, sized for the short action cartridge?
I can be a rifle snob myself at times but you don't need a pre-64 model 70 for a first hunting rifle.
Personally, I'd rather have a G series model 70 with the bolt guide and better gas handling capabilities.Last edited by Fjold; 10-15-2019, 6:21 PM.Frank

GunGenie, the distributor site. You will see offers from your LGS. Best bang for the buck.

faris, what ever you end up with if it is in one of the more common calibers such as the 30-06, .308 Win, .270 and such the ammo will be reasonable priced. Even the all copper stuff in the common calibers should be cheaper than others. Watch for sales when you find the load your rifle shoots well and buy then, a good deal is always just that, a good deal. If you weren't in Calif. I would recommend a Remington 700 from Wall Mart in most any caliber. They sell here for 379.00 + tax and are just fine for a starter rifle but Wally World doesn't sell guns there anymore.Comment

Get a vortex diamondback 3x9 scope with rings and have the shop mount it.
While there are many cartridges that can handle medium-sized game, the .243 Winchester sits at the top of the heap for good reasons: it’s accurate, easy on the shoulder and delivers enough energy for the task at hand.
Get a good pair of binoculars and boots.Comment

I suggested the Tikka because I own one. The stock is fine for a plastic stock and the bolt is smooth. I don't own any of the other 'entry' rifles. I did handle a Ruger American once and wasn't impressed, the tupperware was really 'tupperwareish' though I hear they shoot great. I wouldn't turn one down if someone handed one to me, that's for sure. However, and I can't believe no one else has mentioned this, the one Remington 783 I played with in .30-06 seemed like a fine rifle for $300.00 bucks. If I needed an inexpensive rifle right now, I wouldn't feel bad walking into Big 5 and buying a 783.Last edited by NapalmCheese; 10-15-2019, 11:14 PM.Calguns.net, where everyone responding to your post is a Navy Force Delta Recon 6 Sniperator.Comment
