    Century Arms Wasr question...

    Good afternoon everyone,
I dont know if this is the correct place for this thread but in any case, just got some questions about this rifle.

I looking at purchasing a used Wasr AK-47 at my LGS. The price their asking is certainly too high for a used rifle of this variant...$1000. It also has one of those Compmags installed.

My question for any of you AK-47 Armorers or gunsmiths is, how hard is it to remove this Compmag as it is essentially a "permanent" fixed magazine and is not removable.

Is it a lost cause or can that mag be removed and done so that it accepts magazines. My plan of course is to keep it Ca. Compliant by adding a fin grip and then once at a private property range, use the stock grip, then when done shooting, reinstall the fin grip til I get it home.

So, is this Wasr gonna be worth buying...I really like how it felt in my hands, the weight, the sights...just seems like a really solid rifle...but not for that price as I know you can get a brand new one for nearly half what my LGS is asking. I really want this rifle, but that Compmag configuration is the deal breaker for me.

Any advice would be great...thanks in advance.

You're getting ripped. You get a brand new wasr for ~750 with a fin grip already installed. IMO, if you have to ask, then it's not worth it.

You can always do better on the price if you have a decent FFL that can transfer it in. I'm sure you meant private property out of CA, right?

Yes, private property out of Ca. I meant to be a little more clearer on that but at the time I created this post was about to clock in a work and was in a hurry. (Smiling)

As for being ripped, I thought I stated I know new ones can go for between $700-$800 and could probably find a few good used ones here and there for about $599-$699.

But my whole reason for this post was, I wanted to know if that Compmag attachment can be removed. I'm not an expert with AKs as I am just now wanting to buy my first one and I know Century Arms AKs are hit and miss in terms of quality.

I am trying to figure out if removing the Compmag is really gonna be worth it in terms of having to spend more money for someone to remove it. I am liking this particular Wasr because it was upgraded from the wood furniture to the polymer furniture but again...that frigging Compmag attachment is the reason for this post.

Does anyone know how to remove one or are familiar with this type of configuration. It looks to be either riveted or drilled in from the inside of the receiver and I do not know what type of receiver it is. I am aware of there being a stamped and milled reciever when it comes to AK-47 receivers and I honestly couldnt or wouldnt be able to tell the difference between the two if someone were to hand me one.

And NOOOOOO...I'm NOT trying to create an AW.

Again, that's why I am asking...can these Compmags be removed.

They can legally be removed when the firearm's action is disassembled.
^For AK style firearm = after the top cover, recoil spring guide assembly, and bolt carrier group is removed from the firearm.

In addition, since the AK style firearm that utilizes the AK Compmag retains the factory magazine release, it will need a AK Compmag installed whenever the firearm is assembled.

And to add to it, they are easily removed with just a Phillips screwdriver. I use them often

If you like the Wasr, then buy the Wasr...from someplace like Atlantic Firearms.

But I don't get why you're so fixated on a Compmag or any other fixed mag option. That's not the only compliance option. As others have said, get it FEATURELESS and then you don't have to deal with any of that. Featureless will come with a fin grip wrap, and those can be made Nevada-legal by unscrewing 3 flat head screws. In a pinch, you could use a quarter instead of a screwdriver. Can't get any easier than that. Atlantic even sells them with a featureless option.

Post #3, he actually makes good fin grips. Go to his website, look at his products, you'll see how ridiculously easy it is to convert it back & forth.

Ok, I will type this again so everyone can read it CLEARLY!!!

I DO NOT WANT A COMPMAG CONFIGURATION.

I'm trying to figure out how to have a Compmag REMOVED!!

I understand the Wasr is cheaper brand new, god dang I have said it in every damn response already. Gosh I wish some people would slow the hell down and take the time to actually read what I have been posting.

Not trying to sound like a jerk but the question I have been asking over and again is clearly there....

Can the darn Compmag be removed to accept regular ten round mags...and for God sake, yes I already stated I was gonna get a California Compliant fin grip device!

I am not buying this Wasr as of yet...just trying to do some homework before I make my decision...

Yes, just needs a Phillips screwdriver. 3 minutes tops

And people are telling you that if you don't want the compmag, then just get it WITHOUT it, by getting the Wasr featureless.

Here's an analogy. You like a certain car, but it's priced too high at a certain lot, and it's in the wrong color. So you're asking if it's possible to repaint the car. And people are responding that it's possible to get it cheaper at a different dealership, and in the color that you want without having to bother repainting it.

So I'll repeat it again: buy it configured as featureless, that way it will come to you with the fin grip already installed, and without a compmag that you don't want anyway.

The compmag comes out with an allen wrench. It is held by a single screw. Are you slow on the uptake?

Because if you aren’t a slow learner, buy a brand new WASR because not only are they brand newer, and cheaper, THEY DON’T COME WITH COMPMAGS and then you never have to wonder how a flipping Compmag works, nor apparently learn how to Google

                        Skyhawk,
Thank you for posting that youtube video, that was what I was looking for.

To everyone else who responded, I hope I wasnt coming off as a jerk. I tried google for the info and it was just not giving me the right info I was looking for and believe me, it was getting very frustrating.

I clearly want to say this, the Wasr I am looking at is exactly what I want in an AK platform. The rifle has all the features I'm looking for such as color and what not. Its OD Green and black furniture...love that color combo on my rifles and believe me, I am a frigging kid in a candy store when I look at it.

Now as I've mentioned, its installed with that Compmag and that was essentially the deal breaker. But since my knowledge of AKs and Compmags is pretty much zero, I was debating to maybe go with just a brand new one as this particular Wasr is a bit over priced and yes, a rip off on a $1000 price tag for a USED rifle.

I wanna try and see if they'll sell it to me for cheaper, like 50% cheaper. But hey, if they say no, they know I'll just get a new one ordered from somewhere else and they will have lost the sale.

I was trying to avoid ordering a new one as I was planning to do a layaway sale and pay it off slowly. I wouldnt be able to do that with any LGS here locally. I dont know if even Turners would let me order one and put it on layaway. I think their policy is pay in full and they'll order it. Will have to call and find out.

So, again, I dont want any of you thinking I am being a jerk about it. I just really like this particular Wasr, other than that Compmag being attached and I want to get it before its sold as they would let me put $150 down for a layaway.

I know you guys are trying to save me from a mistake, but if I can get them lower on the price, it might or could be a worthwhile investment for me. Now that I know how to remove that Compmag, I dont mind getting the grip fin to make it CA Compliant.

Sorry for the rambling...good night everyone.
