People are slobs and couldn't care less. The world is their ashtray. So sad.

It seems any BLM land or "free outdoor range area" always get trashed. People think it's a license to shoot whatever trash they can bring with them.

Very sad. And then those same people complain when the land gets shut down or the "tree huggers" claim the shooters make a mess.

There are always bad apples in every bunch. The bad apples always stand out and ruin it for everyone else.

@madolive3 thanks for cleaning up what you could.

People in California are such pigs. They throw cigarette butts out of their Priuses and convince themselves they are green so they can trash up any place they want. I used to see it on the freeway every day.

Over my decades of shooting in SoCal, I've seen many, MANY free public shooting ranges TRASHED and CLOSED! Self-inflicted by your fellow shooters (pigs)!

Texas and Kentucky canyon closed here. No target shooting anywhere in Angeles NF because of trash.

The BLM shooting areas mimic downtown LA, SF, SD, and other big cities. Most are full of trash, both living and anthropogenic. That trash gets guns then said trash takes more trash out to public lands, shoots it up, then goes back home to live in their hovels.

Much of CA has become third world.

This topic pops up often and the explanation of "pigs" and "slobs" always follows. This is completely misguided.

Take any uppity group of white-collar people and stop janitorial service for a week at their office. The place will look like a mess and toilets will be nasty. This is not because "people are pigs or slobs," but because living spaces, much like shooting places, must be actively maintained. There is no way around it.

Expecting shooting places to be clean because "everyone cleans after themselves" is like expecting that office bathrooms and kitchens will be clean if "everyone just cleans after themselves." Simply doesn't work.

So, the only way to keep shooting places clean is the same way that baseball stadiums or hockey rinks are kept clean - someone has to do the cleaning.

I disagree. If at my office we were told no more bathroom cleanup services, the bathroom would become a mess as a result of a select group of people. I couldn't tell you exactly who, but it would. I would not be one of those people.

The trash in my personal office would be emptied daily by me if someone wasn't employed to do it.

I am sure many other offices would have trash for days.

We (firearm owners) will have no places left to shoot, & mostly all because of the 1-3% of the pukes out there.

Thanks Op for picking up what you did. we all appreciate it.

                      I agree

It's an unfortunate thing, but it happens. Good people that fall into the "trajedy of the commons." A burger wrapper flies away, a spilled soda can no one wants to touch...multiply this by all who visit the area over a few years and you have a garbage dump.

Pack it in, pack it out...that's what I remind those that shoot with me.

We do a good job keeping our shooting areas clean around here. I've seen some horrible messes in Northern California.

Yes. People suck. Some of the weekend shooters do not care if the ruin our shooting areas. If they close them down due to trash they will just move to another area. Rinse repeat. Sad. Sad. Sad.

                              Let me phrase it differently.

Have you ever had something fly away from you in the wind? Or, you put it in the trash, but the trash can is open and the wind blows it away? Or you drop something messy, pick up the bits you can, but you don't go home to get the cleaning supplies and remove all the traces of the mess?

That's just the nature of the things. If you want to have public places clean, you have to have active cleaning. Look at any big city. It's not because of the "select few," it's the nature of being a human. Even Mt Everest, with supposedly "woke" and "conscious" people is full of trash that accumulated over years. This includes dead bodies...

Sure there are slobs who do it intentionally and all sorts of people who are disgusting at many levels. You can see it with how they trash their dwellings they rent. However, even without them, it takes an active effort to keep any public area clean.

The only way to have shooting ranges clean is to have trash pickup and cleanup days. Unfortunately.
