I've looked and looked yet I can't find exactly what I want for grips for my S&W J frame 642 and a similar situation with my Ruger SP-101.
I wear size large gloves so maybe this is a mostly a hand size issue.
I like the cushion of rubber grips for these smaller, can-be-snappy guns.
It seems that every rubber grip out there fills in the area behind the trigger guard and in front of the grip.
This does two or three things that I don't want:
- It moves your hand down on the gun, raising the bore height which will increase perceived recoil or muzzle flip.
- It moves your pinky finger down below the grip, costing both gripping area and having the butt slam into the inside of your pinky when firing.
- If the grip is long enough to still allow a pinky grip, then the size of the grips is too big and makes the gun appreciably larger overall.
The Hogue Mono Grip on the Sp-101 is a prime example of this.
Here's a pic of my "Beast" 642 with genuine S&W Boot Grips on the back side and genuine S&W wood scales on the top:

You can see how the rubber grips fill in the behind the trigger guard area but also greatly shorten the front strap length.
In comparison, the old school wood panels allow a full three finger grip and the gun rides much lower in the hand.
I's like to find a rubber 642 grip that is like the original wood panels or maybe something that fills in the behind the trigger guard area much less than the current grips.
Any suggestions?
