Good read here. I was set on a Beowulf till I read this. I am now going to build a 450 Bushmaster

I have a 458 SOCOM. It uses the same bullets as the 45-70 so if you reload you can "borrow" bullets from your 45-70 friends. I have a lot of 45-70 friends.

I have a 50 Beowulf upper parts are proprietary. I couldn't find the Gas block I wanted and ended up machining down the one on the upper to allow a FullFloating handguard . Generally order Underwood ammo no hiccups whatsoever but Upper gets used once in great while.

I thought about a 450 AR but decided on the 350 Legend. That ammo is much cheaper to shoot and still leaves a big hole.

I’d be down for a .450 upper for my FA-CA7, but I’d likely just load it down to .44 Mag levels.

The 458 has a few options

Tromix allows all lugs to stay in place

Others remove lugs so the bolt fails in 500-1500 rounds...


I would suggest that this is a lot of money for a goof

Ended up going with the .50 Beowulf almost solely because it’s a .50cal and I don’t own one yet. I understand the 450BM seems to be a flatter shooting round, but this will never be used for hunting and no plans for self-defense.

I don’t reload so bullet interchangeability doesn’t really matter to me. I’ll probably buy 500 rounds and spend the next year or two popping them off.

I went with Bear Creek Arsenal. Yea I know, super cheap and busted for hiring illegals, but it should do everything I ask of it for under $300.

Maybe I’m just being fussy, but the Beowulf having a smaller rebated rim than the bushmaster sounds like the bolt face should be more durable and the extractor is thicker - am I off with this idea?

It's a hoot to shoot. I reload so use the same projectiles in 4 different firearms and 3 chamberings.

Still trying to locate an adapter for my silencer. Then to work on a subsonic load.

I think that either the .458 Socom or the .50 Beowulf is a better choice unless you do not reload. .458 Socom for variety of bullets and .50 Beowulf for a bigger hole.

I have both.
The .450 and .50 are very similar in size.
The .50 put some wear on my shoulder after 20 rounds. I'm 6', 220 for reference. I could mitigate the recoil by experimenting with the buffer but it works, is reliable and I'm not going to put 1000's of round thru it.
A better muzzle brake might help out.
But that's okay. It's not a plinking round. It costs about $60/box of 20 rounds.
The .50 has a beefed-up extractor.
I got the complete upper from bear Creek and it functions just fine.
There's probably much more bullet selection for the .450.

Ran my 350 Legend yesterday. It's a big bang like 450. At 50 cents per round I can shoot more. I do need to put a brake and gas adjuster on it. My shoulder is sore today.

I have a 16.5" upper that's pretty tame with a decent brake; you can shoot it all day and the recoil is like a 12 gauge dove load. Without the brake, though, it's pretty ugly. A 10 round box will leave you bruised.
