          Give to you? Naw.
Sell to me ten cents on the dollar? Well, if you must.

From the Feds? Why would they care?

There's probably no record of OP's dad's gun, right? Other than the 4473?

No, there was no required-to-use-an-FFL for transfer before 1992 1991; handgun purchases through CA gun dealers (even before the 1968 FFL system) were reported via paper DROS since 1924.

With all due respect, I believe the correct date for all firearm sales, PPT's, etc. mandated via a FFL was Jan.1st, 1991.

So, then does that mean the dad could’ve given the gun to his son (or anybody) prior to 19991/1992 and no paperwork was needed?

If it happened that way....again, prior to that year....was the son (or anybody) supposed to file paperwork, or none needed?

                          You're right - 12078 took effect for 1991. I'll fix, above.

Yes; no paper required before 1991 for transfer to anyone. No paperwork now required for transfers before 1991, though there can be reasons to file a VOLREG that make things easier; for example, one might wish to carry a handgun for CCW that was not involved in a papered transfer from that long ago.

That makes no sense. 40 years ago that form did not exist, and there was no requirement to use an FFL for private sales/transfer's except interstate.
