    Visiting CA from TX

Tried searching but everything I got was related to either moving out of CA or transportation within CA.

A friend is visiting from TX and wants to know if he can bring his AR from there with a pistol grip when he visits CA. He wants to use it at the range.

Obviously those are now AWs here in the state. I believe AWs have never been allowed interstate into CA.

Can anyone give me a concrete answer? Thanks.

Hahaha, hell no. A standard configured AR15 with pistol grip is an "assault weapon" in CA. Doesnt matter where it came from. If its in the state, its illegal. Obviously, I am not referring to CA RAWs or firearms legally possessed by LEOs or any other rare exception.

Texans should only need to visit Commifornia once.... Then go back and tell everyone how bad it is here.

        Succinct, and correct.

Importing what CA law is pleased to call an 'assault weapon' is a felony.

            Correct, but incomplete.

There are exceptions to 30605. One of them is if you are a resident of another state and are traveling for the purpose of participating in an organized competitive match or league competition that involves the use of such weapons.

I thought they nixed that exception.

Since the OP did not bring that up, there's no reason to add that exception.

To be complete all the time, one might rationally say "read everything at this link: http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa...pter=&article= and then consult your favorite firearms attorney for questions."

ETA - and even that is not 'complete', as Gun Free School Zones are in a different part of Penal Code, guns and hunting are in Fish and Game Code, and Health and Safety Code has the no guns for 'danger to himself or others' law.

Nope, still there in 30665. But it's an exception to both 30600 (importing) and 30605 (possession).
                  30665.

Sections 30600, 30605, and 30610 shall not apply to the possession and importation of an assault weapon or a .50 BMG rifle into this state by a nonresident if all of the following conditions are met:

                  (a) The person is attending or going directly to or coming directly from an organized competitive match or league competition that involves the use of an assault weapon or a .50 BMG rifle.

                  etc ...

Tell your friend not to risk his firearms. In fact you should go visit him and shoot normal AR patterned rifles in Texas!

That might be a challenge worth trying. If the CA DOJ wont sell ammo to someone just from a different state. . Hmmm

This thread is a perfect example of "smart" people having really really stupid thoughts. OP said his friend actually used to be a CA resident. So it's even more surprising that he would have such a hairbrained idea. Hopefully I can move out of CA one day. When I do, Im never bringing any guns back into this state. That just doesnt even pass the gut test let alone actually contemplating it.
