    Transporting black powder pistols

I know that modern pistols need to be in a lock case for transport
But what about having black powder pistols in a case
do they need a lock on the container during transport

No they don't, although the LE who pulls you over may not agree.

Haha no, a loaded black powder anything magically becomes a firearm in CA

Unloaded antique firearms are exempt from CA unloaded open carry laws. [PC 16520(d)(5)&(6)]

          Which means...
          1. It's CA legal to transport them, unloaded, without needing to utilize a locked container or having them encased.
          2. It's CA legal to open carry them, unloaded, in areas that do not prohibit the possession of firearms (GFSZ laws apply).

LEOs may or may not be familiar of BP firearms, so better to err on the side of caution and store as if a modern firearm.

Years ago, I was returning from a range and my BP Longrifle was propped up in the back seat (too long to store in the trunk), I was pulled over (ostensibly for 'speeding') and the CHP Ossifer quickly put his hand on his sidearm when he poked his head in to 'observe'. Fortunately, I was able to ally his fears and de-escalate when I s'plained that it was a Flintlock Riflegun. I got a speeding ticket but successfully argued my case for dismissal (trial by written declaration)

                    Can't be too careful.

                          Eat Dirt,

May I suggest the "Josey Wales" costume?

Six unloaded pistols with a pocket full of charged cylinders. Should you meet a Highwayman merely switch cylinders and dispatch the hooligan.
