    BB Gun in City Limits.

Can anyone tell me if there is a city ordnance prohibiting the discharge of a BB gun or Airsoft in my backyard in the city of Citrus Heights Ca. Or where I could go to find my answer.

BB gun, really? If you have a good size yard and are shooting at a good backstop, why not?

I Just called my local Police. 1hr later he called me back to inform me that There is no Muni code against BB guns in my backyard. I was told by an NRA instructor that it was Illegal in my city. So I was asking you guys your opinion while I called the PD. He told me all he could find was 12553(A)(1)which makes it illegal to modify a BBgun to make it look more real. and 12556a which has to do with brandishing in public. Thanks guys. Guess the kids are good to go.

Ah, my favorite movie. I, like Ralphie, had a BB richochet and hit me in the eye. I was terrified and told the folks a branch poked me.

Those were the days...just the Red Ryder and me...no birds were safe.

Yes, those were the good ole days, I myself didn't have a Red Ryder, but had a Much More powerful bbgun bird scoped sniper rifle(crosman 2100 w/4x20 tasco). And yes NO birds was safe from me with the exception of mocking birds and white crowned sparrows. I just got a soft spot for them.

My town in CC County (Lafayette) apparently has an ordinance about discharging any weapon that shoots a projectile. At least that is what the cop told me after a neighbor called on me after shooting my paintball gun a the damn deer that ate all of my wifes freshly planted flowers. I didn't get sited, only warned.

I'm also in Lafayette. The ordinance reads as follows:

When I was a kid we used to range all over with our bb guns. Sadly, those days are over...

So does that mean that nerf dart guns are illegal as well? Since it is technically an air powered rife shooting darts and you could hit someone in the eye....

The State of California defines a bb gun or device as a firearm.(1)

The City of Citrus Heights says this about firearms(2):
                            DIVISION 3. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

                            Subdivision I. In General

Sec. 50-146. Unlawful public nuisances declared

In addition to any other condition constituting a nuisance, it shall be unlawful and a nuisance for any person owning, occupying, leasing or having charge or possession of any property in the city to maintain or allow to be maintained on such property any of the following conditions:

... (26) The firing or discharging of a firearm by any person on any premises within the city, except as otherwise authorized by law.
And I couldn't find the law but a 2006 law made firing a bb gun in a "grossly negligent manner" a misdemeanor, with a prison stay of upto one year.(3)

The 2006 law probably has something to do with that Pittsburg or Antioch kid shooting the kid next door to death with his bb gun (I think he shot from his bedroom window as the other kid was playing basketball in his backyard). But I'm mostly guessing on that one.

Since Citrus Heights is in the County of Sacramento, you should also check the County Ordinances as well. They probably have a place to put such an ordinance, but it doesn't appear that they have defined what a firearm is...
