    Shooting glasses for prescription wearers

I wear prescription glasses for mild strabismus, 24/7.

I would like to find APEL rated shooting glasses that can fit over my normal prescription glasses. Looks like the only ones large enough are actually goggles.

Some APEL rated shooting glasses can use RX inserts, but the quality of those seem to vary across the board. (Wiley X and Revision Military rx insert options got shakey reviews.)

Can I get some solutions from fellow calgunners? Thanks!

APEL - Authorized Protective Eyewear List, https://www.peosoldier.army.mil/equipment/eyewear/

    The page says
What if you need prescription lenses?

By checking the information on this website or an up to date APEL poster, Soldiers can learn which eyewear is prescription (RX) capable. Soldiers who require a prescription may obtain the appropriate prescription insert for their device through their garrison optometry clinic, deployed optometry clinic, or medical support section. Deployed Soldiers may also obtain a replacement prescription through the Government Eyewear System (G-Eyes). Soldiers should use a military optometry clinic to obtain the proper prescription lens carriers for their APEL eyewear.
Looks like inserts are the answer; I have no info on which are good/useful/comfortable.

I have an older set of Wiley x. Good for pistol. The lense does not line up with the irons on a rifle in the center

I ended up getting a pair of glasses from Costco with a prescription safety rated lenses.

Costco and Walmart are a steal for glasses
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

I wear these https://nrastore.com/departments/gea...ooting-glasses , and the work really well, much better than the revisions plus inserts that I was issued when I was in the Army ymmv.

This is about the best I could find if you don't want to look too much like Dorky McDorkstein. Not perfect, but when I wore glasses, they worked well enough. Good coverage, good protection.

I got my Wiley-x saints from optics planet with smoked lenses for $100 and a set of clear lenses for $75 with no insurance needed. Using my insurance with keiser it would have been double or more.

I’m a firearm instructor civilian side, a Marksmanship Taster Trainer in the Army National Guard and civilian/military competitive shooter and I’m near sighted so I have to wear glasses 24/7. I have Wiley’s civilian style safety rates glasses and the saints for sunglasses and eye-pro for the range. APEL approved

I just wear Cocoons sunglasses over my normal prescription eyeglasses. They look like big sunglasses, not goggles. They cost $60. I doubt the lenses are military grade tough but the Coccons seem like a quality product. Hopefully two layers of good quality lenses will be enough to stop a ricochet fragment.

I had my optometrist give me a prescription with a 26" focal distance and had glasses made to match
Now I can see the front sight on my Garand and handguns much better

Some interesting options. Thank you. Tagged for getting older!!

So far I've just used my first pair of beater prescription glasses from LensCrafters- w larger goggles/glasses over them- but I really need to get something specifically designed for shooting.

So many options, but Wiley X work as safety glasses, too.

I've worn Varilux progressive for at least 20 years. From their website:

All of our products are certified to meet or exceed the new ANSI Z87.1-2015 testing for occupational eyewear, bringing industries into compliance with OSHA regulations for Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE.

My eye doctor has said the same thing. Almost all eyeware that is polycarbonate is safety rated now. Mine have been hit by direct ejection from a 10mm and not a scratch.
